Hey I am a student who doesn’t live in Indiana and would like to apply to Butler. I haven’t taken the SAT yet, but I plan on doing so on the next test date which I think is in October. Should I wait until late October and quickly apply with my SAT scores? Or should I apply with my ACT score now-ish and mention in my essay that I plan on taking the SAT on the next test date? Will this look bad? Please give me your output/experience.

Will it look bad? Depends on how high your ACT is. If it meets standards, frankly you don’t even need to submit SAT. Butler isn’t super selective, you know.

Are you applying early action or regular decision?

If EA, there’s not much turn-around time between the Oct. SAT and the Nov. 1 EA application deadline. (There’s enough time; those scores will be available to send to colleges by Oct. 20. But it’s the only crack you’ll get at the SAT before the EA deadline.) If RD, you have all the time in the world before the Feb. application deadline. Whatever you do, you don’t need to put the information that you plan to take SAT in your essay. There may be a place to indicate your plan on the application somewhere. If so, you can tell them. If not, just have the College Board send your scores to Butler.

But T26E4 is right that you don’t need to take the SAT unless there’s some non-Butler reason why you need to take the SAT. The majority of Butler students (close to two-thirds of them) submit ACT instead of SAT. If your ACT score is in the upper 20s or higher, and it includes writing, you should just send that. The middle 50% of Butler students had composite ACT scores between 25 and 30.

Either way, there’s no reason not to start your application now. It won’t be complete for a while anyway. Your application won’t be complete until they get the secondary school report (and your high school transcript) from your guidance counselor. But nobody can get all the pieces in at the same time. When they get the first part of your application (no matter what they get first–test scores, application, whatever), they’ll open a file for you. When more parts of your application come in, they match them to you and add them to your file. All colleges work this way.

Thanks! I got a 29 Comp and 10 Writing on my ACT, so I assume this is good enough. Would it be alright to skip taking the SAT altogether then? I really hate standardized tests… When would it be a good time for me to apply with my ACT score? I see my guidance counselor on the 29th of August by the way.

Google “Butler Common Data Set”. You’ll see that among admitted students the 25th quartile has a 25ACT and the 75th quartile has a 30 ACT. Your scores are on the high end of the typical Butler admitee. If your settled on that school, I certainly wouldn’t take the SAT.

Cool. Thanks for the info!
