So daughter flies in from two months in Africa on Thursday right before Labor Day weekend. On Friday she moves into her new place - a place that doesn’t have a bed.

Any ideas where we could buy a decently priced bed (online or by calling) that can be delivered on a specific day? A specific day right before a long holiday weekend?

Sigh. Kids never make things easy on their parents.

Try Ikea (If they have one in Boston). They have inexpensive platform beds with slats and foam mattress for less than $300.

or you can try overstock.com and have some foam mattress delivered (if she has friend). The foam mattresses are vacuum packed so the delivery is not that expensive.

We’re in a similar situation, though S is moving away from Boston. I suggest her bringing an airbed to guard against delivery mishaps. Don’t buy from IKEA; they charge an arm and a leg for delivery and you will have to assemble the bed. There are many Sleepy’s in the area.

Marite, maybe your son could donate his bed to the cause. If she needs more than a bed, consider renting a small truck and doing your own delivery.

Over30: It’s a nearly new bed, too! But I’m hoping S will come back often enough to justify keeping his room as is. We’re under strict orders not to donate the miles of books he bought.
Here’s one possibility (we have not used it, so cannot vouch for it):
[Boston Bed Company, Call Us Toll Free: (888) 233-2269. Factory Direct Mattress, Futon, Beds and More.
You could try Macy’s furniture store. I have bought several mattresses from them and had them delivered and set up. I bought one set for my stepson sight unseen over the phone and it turned out fine.

I think if you bought it a few weeks ahead of time and specified the date, you could arrange for a specific delivery date or close to it. Our Macy’s in Seattle is having a furniture sale right now.

sleepys delivers for specific days-- they even delivered on september first last year! (which is impressive because the entire boston area moves september 1st). Their delivery fee was only like $40 or something, and we bargained the mattress down to something quite reasonable. If shes going to have roommates she might want to coordinate mattress delivery-- my roommate and I both ordered from sleepys and we only had to pay one delivery fee

The short leash will have to stretch over quite a few states. There are many many universities on the East Coast, ya know. Not all of them are located in the Greater Boston area :)

Hi–didn’t read every post but thought I would chime in with EZY bed sold by Landsend and Frontgate. DD used hers for 3 years and moved it 5 times–it is the size of a large suitcase when closed and with a memory form topper was very comfortable (I did sleep on it). We were sorry that it died but it was worth the $$$ as it was so very easy to move from city to city and apt. to apt. Do watch the setting up video because it is fun too. Advised a grad student in Boston who is now sleeping on one and really likes it.

I knew you could count on cc! You’re the best, and I thank you for all the suggestions, I will follow up all of them to see my options.

And marite, neither of my two children is big on CA weather either. Plus, the Pacific is too cold.
The inflatable mattress idea is a good one, definitely will help out in a pinch, in case delivery is delayed. And one should expect a pinch on Boston’s biggest move-in weekend… which is probably one of the more amazing urban scenes I’ve ever seen.

We’re also trying to help our new grad set up an apartment in another city. Mattress Giant seems to be the place in his area with same day delivery options.

S bought bed at Sleepy’s. He got a futon at Herb’s Rest Stop in Watertown, and we noticed they sold mattresses too (suspect even less $$). That shop was on way to Target/Linen’s?best buy in Watertown.
