the thing is i love both schools, but the car is just something to help me decide in about a week,(may 1). the good thing about jmu is that they have a 6yr law program and a good school, on the other hand um’s law program is about 8 total which is around $250k which my parents if they had too would pay, but i think is too much. My first job is going to be after college so they want me to make the most out of it and come out with no student debt and not a lower gpa due to long hours at work. i am also leaning towards jmu b/c of the 60% girl population and the closeness to my house. i am 80% confident that it will be jmu with the car(they are putting the 50k in my bank aact, the car was my idea and they said i can do anything i want with the money), but the other 20% is just incase some kind of scandal breaks out in jmu that makes the univ. look bad.

i thought about it longer and i think id just choose miami. the campus is amazing and it has a better reputation IMO.

I actually laughed when I read your story cause the same thing happened for me. My rents said if I went to Tufts, no car, and if I went to UVA, I’d get a car (b/c in-state tuition waaaay less than $42,000/yr). However, I chose Tufts; and now I’m trying to transfer to UVA and my parents are refusing to buy me a car. Oh the irony.

PS Cars are wonderful creatures, but really look into the schools first. If you absolutely love miami over JMU, go there… Otherwise I guess go for the car. Can you have cars at JMU for freshman year though?

wow there are so many things you can do with 50k besides a decent car… stock market = more money, travel, so many possibilities for a young teenager who doesn’t really need to worry about anything else…

freshman year you cant have cars, this will either be for soph or if i find out the shuttles work good, a kind of graduation present for myself before i go to grad school, the thing is though, i am going to need a car that is relieable and wont break down/ need a lot of repairs. i am not really a traveling type of guy and not into the stock market. anyway a lawyer/mba student makes atleast $100k(2/3rd tier schools) so if i ever want to travel ill have time later after i get situated in my paractice. the car i have now, '01 mustang gt will be used as an extra car for my parents/my car during the holidays since it has almost 60k miles on it.
the only real thing i like about miami is their weather and the amount of hot girls they have, not to mention the hot weather makes the girls wear less clothes.

You are probably the most shallow poster I’ve encountered on these boards, and that’s saying a lot. Really, go to the school with the hot girls where your car will make you a hot guy if that’s what works for you. Truly, they will be the best years of your life.

This is simple, man. College, you idiot! j/k. But seriously, a key to a car over a key to your future?!

You plan on law school with parents paying. You never know what might happen to their finances over the next four years…illness, bad investments, stock market decline, etc. Maybe you should take jmu and bank the difference instead of buying the car. You really can’t depend 100% that your parents will be able to pay for grad school later, and your new car will have depreciated substantially by then and not worth selling. Sorry to have to sound reasonable.

JMU is the ****. Definitely take the car.
