new guy in town
here is my delimmea, i have gotten into two good schools; u of Miami and James Madison, my intended major is either law or business havent decided yet but i also want to go to grad school. so here is my problem…Miami cost around $30+K a year while i will be getting basically a full ride at JMU. my parents gave me two chocies: go to JMU and get any car $50k and under or go to Miami and get no car because of the tuition. with that amount i could get an Evo 8 which is my dream car and save the extra money for spending money. my parents are also paying for my grad school so it does not matter my chocie. so basically i am asking what you guys would do in this situation

Take the car.

definitely the car

*** pick the college!!

Choice 3: Ask your parents if you can select an inexpensive used car and bank the balance.

(to ellen)the thing is, i am an 18 year old guy who wants a nice fast car, not a used one that i will have problems with and have decreased horsepower. i can also get a custom paint job, engine upgrades and some tint. yea thanks i was kind of leaning towards that decison also.

Before you pick out your car, get the law school admit rates at the two schools.

I love moms. They’re so full of crucial advice.

Get The Car!!!

well another good reason to go to jmu is that jmu has a program to get a law degree in 6 years; going to jmu for 3 and then to gmu for 3 and then you are done. then another dilemma which type of law regular bus or ent., and what type of business prog-ent,acct,… ahhhhh tough decsions, dilemma after dilemma then im going to have to chose where i want to work, what girl i want to be my wife, which house to buy…help

Maybe the moms have some life experience that clues them in on the results of a choice like this. I really can’t imagine what your parents are thinking. My guess? You take the car and go to college with an expensive toy. You spend lots of time taking babes for rides in it and being BMOC. Somehow the hunger that it takes to be successful in life never fully develops. You don’t end up with the spare $50K to buy your son a car.

Sorry, I’ve just seen this too many times. Go to the best college you can and don’t let a car define you.

Agreed, go to JMU and get a cheap car - bank the balance.

Um obviously, go to the school you actually want to go to. If it doesn’t matter to you, get the car, but since you’re even thinking about it, I think you’d prefer Miami? Otherwise it’s pretty much a no brainer.

Your college education will last a lifetime, whereas a car will last (at most) ten years. I’d go to Miami, if that’s where you really want to go.

The Evo-8 won’t last very long, considering the way you will be driving it. (powersliding every corner? Hell yeah! powerslides into oncoming traffic)

I would look into the colleges before making a decision; don’t want to make the next four years of your life miserable by accidentally choosing the wrong place.

college isn’t high school, you won’t impress with your custom paint job.

personally, i like miami over jmu. but a car might change my mind.

Just a little similar story. We bought our son a new vehicle his senior year in high school and he took it off with him to college…at UMiami. Upon coming home after his freshman year we noticed that he had hardly put any miles at all on it. He said the traffic in Miami is such that he hardly drives at all…uses mostly public and university public transportation. This year, he wants to trade vehicles. But would he leave UM. Nope. He loves it there.

While I can’t say I blame you for wanting the new car, just remember this. While a new car is nice, in a year or so, your new car will be used and you will probably be like my son, wanting something different. Your college life will not revolve around your car. It will revolve around where your living, your friends, your studies, and most of all you. So pick the school you feel “fits” you first. If you then get the car it’s a nice perk, but if not I guarantee you’ll be happy with your decision and not wonder what if…

Good luck!

A relative offered my son a new car if he attended the college of their choice. He turned it down, got a job and bought his own car. My vote is to decide on the college without factoring in the car. And I love cars. My first car was a '69 Firebird that I paid $700 for (in 1976). zoom zoom. I bought it with my own money. If you choose option B, you can always get a job this summer and buy your own car.
