Buying first IPod questions?

I am thinking of updating my old mp3 player. I have had this old one for 4-5 years now and I would like something with more space. I was looking at the IPod nano and for the space and price it does not look bad. I do have a couple of questions:

Can I only get music from Itunes?
Can I put music from CDs I already own on it?
Can I use music already on my computer?
What files does it read?
Do I have to install the Itunes software?

And any other general info would be appreciated.

You will need to install the Itunes software. (There might be a way around it…but this really is only way that I do it. We have three different ipods/users in the house and that is what we use.)

You may use CD’s that you own and install them onto Itunes.
And you can use music already on your computer.

I have had several ipods- I put my music on itunes but some of it I have downloaded ( pearl jam <B does not put restrictions on music), some are youtube videos and cds I have transferred to itunes.
I think you would have to install the itunes software.
I have a mac and always have- have found itunes to be easy to use- and if there is a glitch, they are very fast about responding to problems
I would also look at the Apple store for refurbished ipods. They carry same warranty and are essentially new.
WHen my 80gb video ipod recently gave up the ghost, I bought a refurb ipod touch & I love it.

I recommend getting the 16GB nano- I think that’s as high as they go? You definitely want lots of space.

8gb is what I plan to get. That has more than enough space for me because I don’t watch vids or nothing like that.

Another question…How do you turn the volume up and down on it? I don’t see a button for that. And looking at the headphones that come with them I will have to replace them because those type headphones do not work at all for me.

Chose any song on your ipod, when the song is playing, move your finger around the wheel, from left to right is higher volume and from right to left is lower volume…

RebelCats, to blatantly answer all your questions -

Can I only get music from Itunes? - yes, you can get music from itunes, but that is not the only option.
Can I put music from CDs I already own on it? yes.
Can I use music already on my computer? yes.
What files does it read? .mp3, .m4a, quicktime movie files, jpg picture files.
Do I have to install the Itunes software? yes, there’s no way around that, but itunes is arguably the best music software out there.

For the newest iPods, iTunes is needed initially, but there are other media players out there like Winamp and Songbird that you can use to sync music/video with your iPod if iTunes doesn’t float your boat.

Another tip: check the weekly ads before you buy, as there are always promotions with a free gift card with the purchase of a new iPod.

I live in a small town and have to drive a long way to get to a variety of stores. The one store here that sales IPod nanos there is literally only a 4 dollar difference between them and the apple website them selves. Plus at Apples website I can get it engraved for free and I was just gonna engrave belongs to: my name so there is proof that its mine (its engraved on the back).

I will checl out Songbird and ask the hubby about winamp. He has used winamp so he knows more about that then me.

I got a refurbished nano from Apple (online) and saved fifty bucks. Works great.
I also got a case for it (to protect it) with a carabiner so I can attach it to my jeans or sweats.
I loaded CD music but also download songs from Itunes… Watch out…it’s a bit addictive…songs are usually 99 cents.
I also got some ipod speakers so I can play it in my kitchen when I’m cooking…don’t like wearing those headphones ALL the time.

^If you get it engraved, consider adding an email address (like firstname.lastname@hotmail.com) or phone number, so if it’s lost and someone finds it, they can contact you.

Love the iPod. It’s great for that road trip. Both cars accomodate it. When we rented a car, we made sure there was a jack for the iPod. Airplane trip with the music was nice. Train trip also.

I would recommend purchasing a recharger for travel. And purchase some earbuds. The Apple ones hurt. Got Sony (soft) earbuds and I was good to go!! Of course hubby got huge headphones, but whichever makes you happy!

Enjoy!

Also don’t forget, if you buy it online somewhere you usually won’t have to pay sales tax.

Definitely, definitely check out the Apple iPod refurbished page.

I have purchased three refurbished iPod’s through Apple and have not had one speck of trouble with any of them and it was a very easy transaction. And much cheaper than the new ones.
