Buying your way into UF Medical School

How can something like this happen in a state school? Not only are faculty members outraged about this but the residents of the state as well.

The reputation of the University of Florida in these competitive times (with the state budget being slashed), can not afford something like this. Something is definitely wrong at the highest levels of leadership at the University of Florida.

[Med student lacked MCAT, committee members say - News - GainesvilleSun.com](http://www.gainesvillesun.com/article/20080410/NEWS/804100319/1007/NEWS)

How should I go about obtaining letters of recommendation?

You should plan to get at least three academic references from professors. Two of these letters should be from science professors and the third from a non-science professor. You can collect up to two additional letters and these should be from an employer, a research supervisor, a physician, or someone you have worked with. You should avoid letters from congressman, clergy, or friends of the family. You should ask them, “would you be comfortable writing me a strong letter of recommendation?” Hopefully the answer is honest–if they say no, do not be offended but ask someone else. The actual content of the letter is much more important than the status of the letter-writer to the professional school admissions committee. Be sure to give your recommender a copy of your transcript, a resume, and your personal statement. You may choose to use the OHLPA Letter of Recommendation Service to help in your collection and dissemination of these letters.

I guess letters from the Governor & State Senator are not technically "from your “congressman”??
New Governor same old political games.

“Something is definitely wrong at the highest levels of leadership at the University of Florida.”

I disagree! From what I have read the new Dean got rid of some dead weight administrators. Evidently these old school faculty members were not striving for excellence.

I know this story and everything associated with it, is making a lot of the premeds here upset. Kone said that 10% of a med school class haven’t taken the MCAT. Thats false, the only students who dont take the MCAT are people in accelerated BA/BS-MD programs. As for UF, they have 12 every year from the Junior Honors Medical program. People are upset because he was rejected by the ADCOM’s twice: 1st from junior honors and 2nd from regular admissions. He did not take the MCAT. He applied (Feb…) after the deadline (Jan 15). Plus he has way too much political connection to kone and etc (his dad raised $15,000 for Crist run for gov.). If I were him I would be embarrassed to start next year, esp with your name (Ben Mendelsohn) all over the newspapers.

That was also an issue I had. How can the gov and a senator know how I will do in medical school. Thats why med school as for letters from your professors, doctors you have shadowed, research PI’s, and employers.

One can only wonder if the same is not going on at the undergraduate level. After all, Machen’s response to this incident has not been very forthcoming…

The University of Florida has now launched a privacy investigation to find out looking for the faculty member or the student who may have leaked the story about the now well known controversial admission to the medical school.

This shows how disconnected the admin of UF really is: Putting energy into finding out who leaked the embarrassing story instead of taking action and responsibility to prevent further unfair influences in their admission process.

Go figure.
