I am wondering how hard/easy is it to get in? How much do the teacher recs matter because im a sophomore and no 9th grade teachers write recs at my school and I did not really get to know any of my teachers in 10th grade that well( they like me and i participate in class but they dont think im amazing or such) My g.p.a is just 4.0, i am applying to physics and astrophysics because I want to be a physicist when i grow up and i have been reading physics books since i was 13. My EC’s consist of Science Bowl(B Captain or B team depends on next week), co-found a nonprofit with my brother to help autistics, taking an astronomy class at a local community college, over 200 hours volunteering and thats pretty much it so far.

I’ve been wondering this also Anyone wanna share?

Three of my friends went last year the summer after their sophomore year. One of them didn’t make it 'cause he dgafed the app, even though he is definitely competent. The other two were all-around smart (4.0 unweighted GPAs), probably had fine teacher recommendations, two extracurriculars (one musical instrument and a sport). When they talk about it, they usually just tell me about the crazy parties and talent show they attended. I think they learned something though, haha.

haha

10 char

Admission depends on which cluster you’re applying to. In some clusters, less people apply than there are room for. In other clusters, such as biotech at UC Davis, more than 180 people apply for ~20 spots. So it really depends.

i have seen so many threads about crazy parties at cosmos… um not at the one i went to. well i guess it depends upon your definition of crazy.twas fun though.

Anyone know if Robots to Rockets is a prestigious cluster?

Robots to Rockets at UCI is a moderately competitive cluster. The professors are great, especially Dunn-Rankin. You should apply. But if you are looking for great research opportunities try a bio or chem cluster. COSMOS UCI is strict compared to other UCs. They have a lot of rules regarding dress code, girl/guy interaction, etc. The RAs are great once you get to know them.

Question: What do we do with the Teacher Recommendation worksheet? Are the teachers e-mailed the worksheet when you send them the e-mail through the application website?

I believe you’re supposed to give it to them in person when you ask them to write it, but I’m fairly sure that the questions on there and the questions on the online thing are pretty much the same.

How long does it take to know if you got into the program or not?//
When do they notify you of your acceptance/deference?

I think last year I got a letter around the last week of April.

What do we mail them?

$30 app fee

2 teacher recs w/ app WS

Is the online portion only the online application?

About the teacher rec: the e-mail the website sends them is instructions for the rec letter, but the teachers give you the envelope w/ the app WS to mail, right?

Uhh… O_o I’m pretty sure the teacher rec is completely online, they don’t give you anything and you don’t have to mail in the worksheet or whatever- both worksheets are for your own reference, so you can get a head start on your app before the site opens.

Also, anyone who applied/got in last year, would you mind sending me your short essay answers? I’m not completely sure how to go about writing these…

Does anyone know how competitive the UCD Physics in Electro-optics/Nuclear Technology and Intro to Engineering Mechanics are?

thanks tnyn! im also applying to this other chemistry molecule one. hopefully i get into either :)

hey I was wondering do students on the state lunch program need to pay the 30 dollar application fee?

@chocolatechips i heard in previous years the Phsyics and nuclear was much more competitive and it had to be a first choice cluster. however numbers from last year said there was only 20some applicants. thats going to be my 2nd choice

@dannynobel, yes even if you get free lunch, you still have to pay the application fee.

Do you have last year’s numbers then, battlehardened?

Does anyone know about the competition of the UCSD clusters? I want to secure a backup in the event I don’t get my first choice (The Amazing Red Blood Cell).
