C STUDENT ; What does the future hold for me ?

When I graduated from my high school my cumulative grade was a 74/100 unweighted. To keep in mind this is one of the most rigorous schools in Maryland ( Friends School of Baltimore). I still manage to get into two very prestigious schools despite my sub-par grades ( Whittier college and Morehouse) (Whittier more likely than not i was admitted because my interview with the Representative that came to our school and the fact i play lacrosse.) Sadly, I cannot afford to go to either school and no am stuck going to the local HBCU Morgan state. During all my hardships at school I dealt with death and I was diagnosed with severe depression and mild narcolepsy. I happen to be very close to the president so he could put in a good word. My principal and other faculty see very high potential in me but I struggle producing it sometimes. wondering hypothetically if i averaged a 3.0 or something along the lines of that during my freshman year what would be my chances ?

Is community college an option for you?

I would just start at community college, then transfer.

I honestly don’t know . Me and my family never looked at community college as an option .

My advice is don’t let what you expect to happen keep you from trying something.
If you can’t afford prestigious colleges, but still want to go to them, try getting a job and some student loans. It might seem like a hassle, which it is, but every moment lost is precious time, including the ones coming up, and you don’t want to be like me, going to a college they don’t really want to and being way above the ability level of your environment.
If you managed to get into good schools with a low gpa, there is something in your favor, so as far as applying to schools, it’s worth seeing if you get in and trying the routes available if they seem favorable if only to validate what you expected (or, possibly, surprise yourself).
If any of this is unclear, just say so.

What can your family afford to pay?

Have you considered any of the other Maryland public options? If you are happy to stay close to home, Towson could work for you. You also could check out CCBC as a CC option. There is a branch that meets on the Towson campus, and the students live in the Towson dorms which guarantees a smooth transition to Towson if that is where the students want to complete their degree programs.

All of the MD CCs have formal articulation agreements with the state Us, so look for that information at the CC website. You can also check course equivalency using http://artsys.usmd.edu/

If you think that it would help to get your health problems sorted out, consider taking a gap year, and applying to places that your family is better able to help you pay for.

Wishing you all the best!

Thank you guys for the references . When I got into those two I was suprsied myself. I think apart of why I got in was being able to interview and my essay I could post it possibly if you guys were interested . Sadly, I only applied to Morgan St because I was so set on leaving Maryland and plus I was used small environments so college park wouldn’t have worked out. Financial it makes sense for me to go to Morgan state because I’ll have to only pay 5,000 vs 30,000 at Whittier . My mom has said she’ll take out loans in my name but I don’t want her in more student debt.

Whittier is not $100,000 of debt better than Morgan State. You and your mom don’t want to have to pay that off some day.

If you work hard you can get a good education at Morgan State or any of the other public colleges and universities in Maryland. Take a look at Frostburg, Salisbury, and Towson, and see what you think. It is probably too late to get in for the fall, but you might be able to start second semester.

My goal/ dream would be to apply to a private institution after my first year . However, I’m curious of how my high school grades are weigh along with my freshman year grades .

The difficulty with applying for transfer after your freshman year, is that the colleges will only have your high school transcript and one semester of college grades when the decision is being made. So even if you do ace all of your classes that semester, it may not be enough to make a difference.

The other thing that is important to know, is that financial aid often is not very good for transfer students, and the Net Price Calculators at the college and university websites aren’t reliable for transfers. It looks like you need significant aid, so you really need to investigate the aid policies very, very carefully.

ok so I am currently attending Morgan state and it is way too easy. Do you think i would able to transfer after this year?

“define easy” what’s your major?

All you can do is apply for transfer, and see what happens.
