CA bar shooting on College Night

My condolences to those affected by the CA bar shooting - esp on College Night and for the sergeant who came to help and died - though to all affected whether college students/law enforcement or not.

It gives me the shudders to wake up to this sort of news.

I turned on the news to see what the weather forecast was for this morning and before the screen came into picture, the first words were, “it is a horrific scene inside, the worst I’ve seen in my 41 years as a police officer…”

At that point, something terrible had happened overnight, but it was several more minutes until it was clear what had happened. I just cannot comprehend these senseless tragedies.

How many more of these before we come together as a country and at least try to address the issue?

There were people at that bar that survived the Las Vegas shooting.

A close friend’s daughter is a frosh at Cal Lutheran, snd this bar is a hangout for the college. No idea if she was there, but this will surely affect everyone on campus. :frowning:

My daughter has gone line dancing there before, and several of her friends go regularly. None were there last night. It is a heartbreaking and senseless situation.

I have a friend (younger) who is a Cal Lutheran grad and active alum - yes, she said that it is a bar they often hung out at.

I haven’t read anything about who did it, motive, etc. but it’s very, very upsetting and depressing.

A reporter said it best - “the worst mass shooting in 12 days”.

Heartbroken over this one. And stunned.

From the Pepperdine twitter feed:
“The University has determined that multiple Pepperdine students were on site at Borderline Bar and Grill in Thousand Oaks. At this time, the University is working to identify and provide support to those students. (1/2)”

“the worst mass shooting in 12 days” :frowning:

Needless to say, it’s been the subject of a few conversations here at school today. I feel for this generation growing up where this sort of thing can happen anywhere, anytime, and so frequently.

America the beautiful… :frowning: And deadly.

Sheriff quote: “No reason to believe the shooting is connected to terrorism.” This is the current face of terrorism.

^ Yes, EXACTLY @intparent

https://www.washingtonpost.com/outlook/2018/11/01/i-am-i-belong-massacre-generation/?utm_term=.f3e35c328526 This is the reality for our children.

The madness must end now! How many more must die before we take this situation seriously? This is a real problem, getting worse. Time for our country to set aside partisan positions, ignore lobbyists, and do the right thing!

My biggest worry was my daughter walking back to her dorm from a bar, not being at one. No words.

I am so sickened by this. Its in our county and my kids have been there. Their friends go there. And I had to make a decision to tell my 16 yr old as I drove her to school. Another shooting. This one closer to home. And as this is going through my head, I worry about my other kid who is away at school who called to tell us that another student had posted a threatening video on FB showing him LOADING A GUN and directly addressing the law students. The admin is “investigating”. THIS HAS GOT TO STOP.

Sooner or later, each of us will be touched personally by this type of violence or know someone who is. For me it happened this summer, when five people were murdered at the offices of my local paper (in a building where my husband used to work).

I wonder if these one-and-done mass shootings are now the MO of people who, in the past, would have become serial killers. Look at the following article on the huge decline in serial killers since the 1980s:

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2018/sep/15/are-american-serial-killers-a-dying-breed

And then the increase in the number of mass shootings (scroll down to “158 shootings”):

My older daughter works at a bar. She is very upset about this shooting in particular, because she has realized that if something like this happened close by and she chose to flee the scene, she would probably be fired by her employer.

My son has been to this bar in the past. There is a call out to the community for blood, especially 0-, the universal donor.

The shooter was a former Marine who was examined by ‘mental health professionals’ for PTSD. I use the quotes because I don’t know what sort of mental health professionals they were; whether psychiatrists, or something else. The gun was owned legally. He had had the police called out for a shouting incident that the neighbors could hear and it was the neighbors who called police.

Obviously something needs to be done to keep those with mental health issues from harming others or themselves. This is an issue with all the mentally ill vagrants on the streets as well, who are now causing a typhus epidemic in this area due to rats infesting the accumulation of their garbage. But I digress.

Praise needs to go out to law enforcement. There were off duty police there who while not armed, put their bodies between the shooter and the bar patrons. Incredible heroism.
