CA Private Colleges and transfering?

Hi there! I finished applying to some UCs and CSUs back in November. I’ve been looking into various private schools because of recent budget cuts for public schools.

GPA UW: 3.7
GPA W: 3.9
SAT: 1810
SAT II: Bio 600, Math2 600, Korean 740

Any recommendations for a private school in california appreciated! Excluding all girls colleges (like Mills); as I really like diversity in gender, religion, ethnicity, culture, etc). Preferably small/medium class sizes. Good dorms, clubs, and campus life. Grants and financial aid would really be helpful - by need and merit.

For back-up, I was thinking about attending a CC – > Transfering into a UC or another college. I heard some CCs can give you a guarentee admission to an affiliated UC as long as you maintain a certain gpa and complete certain courses? When and how do we apply for this? Would this pathway be ‘better’ than attending a CSU?

Thank you so much!

Pepperdine or Chapman are pretty good private colleges with great amount of financial aid  I think Chapman’s classes are pretty intimate as well, and it’s small school, but great area.

As fo CC, its called TAG. It guarantees you admission to certain UCs if you completed IGETC and have gpa at certain level… not sure exactly what it is though, forgot.

I think the TAG application deadline was back in Sept/Nov. Does anyone have suggestions for a safety school?

My CSU applications will most likely be canceled because I missed the SAT score deadline. >.<

^ The *TAG application deadline *only applies to students enrolled in a California Community College who are ready to transfer to their guaranteed UC <a href=“Understanding UC transfer | UC Admissions”>Understanding UC transfer | UC Admissions; .

Check the linked information carefully to see which campuses offer a TAG (not all campuses do). If you decide to attend community college and transfer to a UC, go to your community college counselor and request the TAG form and submit it. Complete the requirements and you will be able to transfer to the designated UC.

just because the uc’s are having budget cuts, does not mean it will end up being more expensive, with or without financial aid than the types of privates you can get into in california with your stats.
The only private california colleges that offer financial aid to the point were the cost of attending it can be cheaper than some of the uc’s,(claremont, usc, stanford, cal tech, maybe occidental)are out of your reach with your stats. The only exception might be scripps, which is an all girls college in the consortium of the claremonts(which will provide diversity).

If your aim is to attend nothing less than a UC, community college then transferring to a UC, is extremely easy. Your local community college will have a page or two(or even online) about IGETC. IGETC states the different types of classes you need to take at your community college to get the general education out of the way so you can transfer smoothly into your major in junior year at any given UC. Your community college counselor can also provide further information about signing guaranteed agreements with a particular uc, provided you meet the requirements(exceptions with i think berkeley and ucla).

You MIGHT have a shot at merit at Santa Clara, but I don’t believe those stats will get merit at Scripps.

I was referring to need based aid when I wrote Scripps. ^ Since claremont schools tend to meet 100 percent of need or at least give good need based aid awards.

Oh! That makes sense.

Santa Clara University and Scripps? I’ll look into them, thank you !!

@liek0806 and alamemom, do you know when TAG (CC->UC) apps are due? I can’t seem to find dates on the .pdf file or the UC websites

Most students fill out their TAG forms during their first semster at their community college. As liek0806 mentions, sign up for IGETC courses (these are the courses you will be expected to complete for your TAG) and next Fall make an appointment with your counselor at the community college. Tell the counselor you plan to transfer to a UC and would like a TAG. (You can transfer cc to UCs without a TAG! The TAG just gives you a guaranteed option.)

You do not need to worry about missing any TAG deadlines at this point! Continue your applications to four-year institutions (there is always the slight possibility SJSU and SDSU will be lenient with their SAT dealines). If you check here [CSUMentor - Apply Online - Status Report](<a href=“Cal State Apply | CSU”>Cal State Apply | CSU) you will see that five CSU campuses are still accepting applications for some majors. If there are any that are open in your areas of interest you can add that campus and pay the application fee.

Next spring be sure to submit an application (generally a free online app) to your local community college - most of them accept applications in March or April for Fall - to be sure you have a spot as some are currently overcrowded. In April you can assess your options and decide what would be best. If you choose community college -> UC, you have PLENTY of time to do your TAG at that point.

Thank you so much!!

I applied to CSU Bakersfield. To be honest, I would rather use the TAG pathway than to attend a CSU. I’m going to give SJSU and SDSU a call this Monday, but it’s highly unlikely that they’ll let me rush SAT scores in because they clearly stated apps would be canceled if it wasn’t in by December… It wouldn’t hurt to try though!
