“Caddo Student is Junior Olympian Fencer and Presidential Scholar” (Shreveport, MS)

<p>Caddo Magnet High student John G. Burford has been named a 2008 Presidential Scholar by U.S. Education Secretary Margaret Spellings.</p>

<p>A Junior Olympian in epee fencing, Burford also is president and treasurer of the Teenage Republican Club, associate editor of the Shreveport school’s newspaper and Varsity Quiz Bowl captain. He is the founder of a public service club focused on peer tutoring and urban clean-up and teaches underprivileged children at the local youth center. </p>

<p>Burford, who is working on a novel, has won awards in writing and music and has played the cello for the regional and state honors chamber orchestra. He plans to attend Princeton University this fall.</p>

<p>Christine Chang has been selected as one of 120 U.S. Presidential Scholars. District officials said Chang, a senior at Westlake High School, is one of only three academic Presidential Scholars in Texas and the only one in the Austin area. Chang, who is active in student council and the band, will attend Princeton in the fall. </p>

<p>U.S. Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings recently announced the selection of Alexander B. Katz, of Exeter, N.H., who attends Phillips Exeter Academy in Exeter, as a 2008 Presidential Scholar.</p>

<p>Katz led his school’s Debating Society and Academic Team. He has competed at the varsity level in lacrosse, indoor track, golf, and water polo. Katz produces and hosts a radio show, writes for the school newspaper, and participates in a film production troupe. He serves as a peer tutor and as a peer counselor. Katz was elected to the Cum Laude Society, and he received a Scholastic Gold Key Award in Photography. He will attend Princeton University, where he will concentrate in East Asian Studies.</p>
