CAL GRANT not awarded: Ineligible Degree/Certificate, School Not Elig for Cal Grant?

Please help me. I am confused.

I got into Berkeley EECS (all 9 UC’s except SF) and already SIR’d.

Some starting questions:

 1. Why Cal Grant C?
 2. Will I still hear about my eligibility for Cal Grants A and B?

mygrantinfo.csac.ca.gov says that Cal Grant C was not awarded to me because: “Ineligible Degree/Certificate, School Not Elig for Cal Grant”

Of course, “Cal Grant C awards are not for students studying for a four-year degree.” So why was I put in Cal Grant C?

And does it matter if UCLA is listed instead of Berkeley as my school of attendance? I read in a thread that they use the first school listed in the FinAid application, and that it shouldn’t matter because we still didn’'t know whether we’d get admitted to that school. I tried changing it but I couldn’t.

Some stats: 4.0 GPA, immigrant.

If it says you’re ineligible for C that means you’ve already been disqualified for A and B. Possibly because your gpa wasn’t above the minimum, your income was over the ceiling. Unless you are eligible for the Entitlement awards, it’s a crap shoot. The Competitive awards can be difficult to get.

What did you put in your high school name? A high school outside the US?

First of all, thank you so much for the replies.

@2016Candles “Possibly because your gpa wasn’t above the minimum, your income was over the ceiling.” As I said, my GPA is 4.0 and my EFC is 0. I also got UCLA Regents.

@Moshe1010 Yes, it is a foreign high school. I didn’t know that mattered?

Check this
http://www.csac.ca.gov/cgm/chap04.pdf</a></p>

Ctrl f “foreign school”

@sarahchun - Cal Grant C is strictly for trade schools.

It may say not awarded because you aren’t going to one.

Also to be noted the cycle that just ran for Calgrants A-C is for either Freshman (March) and Transfer Entitlement (low-income May) if you don’t believe you would qualify for one of those they have the competitive cycle in September -October which I’m guessing is when you would be considered for a Cal Grant A or B Competetive award for UC Berkeley

Thank you for the replies!

@hairlesscow‌ Well, the “no foreign HS GPA” only applies if you submitted HS GPA. I submitted California CC GPA.

@Matt4200 Thank you! This makes me hopeful. I’ll look into that … although it still doesn’t explain why I didn’t get Cal Grant A nor B while others did?

Check out this link to verify that you meet all of the criteria for a Cal Grant recipient.

http://www.calgrants.org/index.cfm?navId=12</a>

@Sarahchun - These were currently Entitlement meaning low income do you believe you have a low income or meet the criteria?

Or would you be more suited for the Competetive Award?

Like for me I got Awarded the Cal Grant B Entitlement, I’m independent and my Income for 2013 was less than $15,000.

Income isn’t the only thing but it’s a main thing for the entitlement then they look at GPA after income, and then disadvantaged stuff and so on.

@sarahchun
Are you a permanent resident? If yes, when did you get it and how?
How old are you? If you’re over 24 and make less than $X than you are eligible. If you are less than 24 years old, you are pretty much dependent on your parents (and their money, including their income).
There is another factor - CA resident. You need to be at least 2 years as a CA resident to get the grant. Basically if you received it during you CC education, you should get it now as well.
You also had to apply FASFA by March 2nd. If you applied just now, then you’ll know only september how much you got (if any).
