Cal Poly 2014 Transfers and beyond

@comsce89: Yeah, Cal Poly’s reputation for technical majors is skyrocketing in my opinion. I was told by my Operations Research I teacher (you should take this class if you’re a comp sci major possibly, a few were in there) that the math program at Cal Poly Pomona was booming. I already attend Cal Poly and actually just got my spring quarter grades in yesterday. I remember in community college hearing about this “jump” you have to make transitioning from CC to university and it is a little intimidating the first quarter, but you should do just fine if you’re smart and hardworking. I mean, I am not really the latter (big advice to future students: procrastination was OK for me through my junior year, but I am already prepping for fall quarter), but I got good grades this quarter even though my classes were harder than previous quarters. You’ll get used to the fast-pacedness probably after a quarter.

The upper-division synthesis classes you will learn a lot, but they’re not really that much harder that community college classes in my opinion. CC courses I just dumped that knowledge into a garbage can and burned it, I’ve actually retained a lot of what I’ve learned from these general education classes which unfortunately/fortunately everyone has to take. Doesn’t matter if you finished your GE’s at a community college, these are different. I had a 2.9 when I applied, ~3.1 when I sent in my final transcripts. Mostly due to lack of trying, not lack of ability. Try hard your last year so you can make sure you transfer, that’s what I did.

Also, don’t freakout if a lot of people are failing. I mean, freakout if it’s you, but I have had classes where the average was less than 40% here (never happened at community college) and for most of my classes around 90% of your grade is based on test scores. My Sampling Theory class (STA 310) was just based on two exams (50/50). Some professors curve, which is not a bad thing. I am not sure, but I know that in my Partial Differential Equations class this spring from the first midterm the most common score was a 56%. I got an 80 something and thought I bombed the final but came out with an A- in the class. At least as a applied math/stats major (not a comp sci major) in my experience I’ve worked on a lot of projects this past year, which I never ever did in community college. I definitely am getting practical as well as theoretical knowledge. The education at this university I believe definitely gives you a good balance. I’ve never thought for a single instance any one of my classmates was dumb, but that may vary by department. Lol.
