Cal Poly Admission 2012

I’m a Junior in high school currently, and am hoping to be accepted into Cal Poly SLO in the spring of my Senior year.

I will likely have a 3.5 GPA (weighted to CSU/UC standards), and a SAT score around 2000.

I will have done marching band for all four years, freshman band for one year, wind ensemble for three years, and for two of those three years, I will have been first trumpet.

I also have been accepted into the Santa Clara Country High School Honor band, and plan to audition again in my senior year.

My private music instructor is a senior professor at SJSU, and has held his post for thirty years.

In the fall of my senior year, i plan to audition for the Santa Clara Vanguard Cadet Corps.

All three years of high school that I took a social science, I will have taken an AP one, and in my junior year, I have additionally taken psychology, which counts as an additional social science.

Also, I plan to apply with the early decision option, which will bind my choice to Cal Poly.

I plan to go to Cal Poly to seek either a Music or Political Science Major, or possibly a double major.

What are my chances of getting in, and should I take this course of action?

Also, what other choices/colleges/plans do you recommend?

Thanks for the help.

Why do you want to apply ED to SLO? For some it’s a great idea; what’s your reason?

Cal Poly SLO basically crunches numbers (GPA & SAT/ACT) for admittance. They don’t care about extracurriculars. I have been following the SLO blogs and many, many kids were denied this fall for admittance with 4+ GPA and 2,000+ SAT scores.

My kid was a band geek just like you – and very proud of it!! He did 4 years of marching band, Jazz band, concert band and drum line. Flute, trombone, baritone and auxiliary for drum line. It was his entire life. He just got accepted to SLO’s engineering program and he was one of the first 200 notified (if that means anything). He had a 4.40 weighted GPA and a 31 ACT (34 math and 34 English). I suggest that you work on getting up your GPA and acing the SAT or ACT. My kid did much better on the ACT. I suggest that you start now getting prepared for those tests and if you blow them away, you’ll have a better chance. Definitely apply, I can tell you’ll do great at the school with that much passion. Also, a music major will be easier to get in than engineering. Good luck!
