Cal Poly Pomona / Occidental

I would suggest checking the ratio of local kids attending some of these schools in SoCal, like LMU and others. When a school draws a high proportion of students from local area it may tip off a commuter school, where the campus clears out on the weekends, which in turn usually means less activities on campus on weekends, or less students around to attend performances. I’ve heard many of the kids at LMU, for instance, bring their cars to school, live off campus, continue to hang with their HS buddies (who may go to school at SMCC, UCLA, USC, etc) and–if true-- this may have an impact on out-of-staters. Or not. Just thought I’d suggest a student may want to consider this aspect and, if touring campuses, to ask/look around/investigate.

It doesn’t seem like you want to go very far up north, Bisouu, but if you were, I would suggest looking at San Francisco State. A few friends of mine toured there and really enjoyed the program, but decided to go elsewhere. S.F. is a great theatre city, and the program is non-audition.

She is looking all over CA and NYC so any suggestions would be very much appreciated. The reason we had concentrated our efforts in CA was because there seemed to be quite a few good college choices close to home. But she is not ruling out going further away. :)

Chicago is a great theatre town with lots of college options as well!

Hi everyone, it looks like you’re having some thoughtful discussion about colleges. I’m a current sophomore at Occidental College and an intern in the Office of Admission. If anyone has any questions they’d like to ask a student at Oxy, feel free to ask away!

Sarah are you a theater major?

No, but I know theater majors and I can relay any super specific questions you have back to them and answer here!

I tried counting the number of classes that were more acting/performace type classes as opposed to theory classes. Could you find out how many non-theory classes are offered?

From looking at our course catalog under the theater department, courses are not explicitly labeled as theory or non-theory. However, it looks like the majority of theater classes are not purely theory classes.
