Cal Poly SLO Class of 2028 Freshman Discussion Thread

Email was just sent saying:
“…just a quick reminder that all applicants will be notified of their admission status by April 1. In the meantime, there’s so much more to learn! Plan a visit today to experience your Cal Poly.”

I read this to mean decisions will start rolling before then and even those who are not offered a spot will know by April 1st

I was just going to respond that I thought it must be an April Fools joke.

April 1 is usually the “no later than” date.

The website also says by April 1

Oh good, then it was just a mistake by the newspaper.

The SLO website has historically stated the decisions will be posted by April 1.

The article says SLO will begin releasing decisions on April 1st, citing the university’s spokesperson. It does not say by April 1st. I don’t know if it is accurate, if the reporter is wrong, or if the the spokesperson misspoke. With the FAFSA delays and SIR change, it is possible that April 1 is the date.

I called admissions. The article is incorrect. Decisions will be by April 1st. They don’t know who made the mistake - the reporter or the spokesperson, but it is incorrect.

yes, I understand this. But there are far more California residents than there are Virginia residents. The bottom line is: If you are a Virginia resident, it is easier to get into William and Mary than if you are OOS. Whereas at Cal Poly the opposite is true. I simply think that California should not allow a situation where you are at an actual disadvantage by being a resident. If that means they entire class is from CA, so be it.

I’ll say the same thing I said on the SDSU thread: Out of state students and their parents have absolutely nothing to do with the admissions process. Contact your state legislators or the board of regents or the governor or whoever controls these sorts of things in California if you really want to change things.

I wonder if you could find something more constructive to do with your time? When students or parents see complaints like yours in a thread, there is no way they are going to share their stats. So your comments are negating the point of this website and forum.

Again, you are focusing on the acceptance rates only and not looking at the whole picture. Other than 2 of the Cal states (SDSU and SLO), the number of enrolled OOS and even International students Freshman students throughout the whole CSU system is very small (majority less than 100).

For Fall 2023 all of the CSU system:
Enrolled CA residents: 63,706
Enrolled OOS: 2827
Enrolled International: 1022

If CA schools did that, all in-state student’s tuition would need to go up to make up for the loss of income from high paying out-of-state students. It would therefore make it unaffordable to many more CA residents.

It’s strange …people complain about not having enough in-state kids being accepted at the schools their kids apply to, yet those same families are also applying to oos colleges. So it’s okay for them, but not for others. :man_shrugging:

Gumbymom, do we have data for admission off the waitlist for fall of 2023?
Anything based on major?

Waitlist data is not broken out by major.

13176 waitlisted and 193 admitted for Fall 2023.

Is it unbalanced compared to the male v. female application rate?

Hi there,
I’m trying to find acceptance rate for Ag Systems Mgt. My son applied with a Cal Poly GPA of 3.98. Its diluted due to taking a lot of Cuesta classes in HS. I thought I saw that you mentioned ASM has a yield rate of 75%, does this mean they will accept fewer applicants?
Any information you can provide is appreciated. Thank you.

SLO does not publish acceptance rates by major but they publish a Target projection list.

From this data, you can get an estimate of the admit rate by taking the FTF Target number multiply by 3 (assuming a 33% yield) and divide by the FTF apps

So for Agr. Systems Management, you have 30 Target and 111 Apps which is 30x3/111 which gives you a projected estimate of 81%.

Since yield and GPA/stats by major are also not listed, this is just an estimate and you do not have any idea how competitive the applicant pool is for each major.

The overall yield for the College of Agriculture was 39% and the admitted SLO GPA range was 3.88-4.23.

Thank you!!

I never said out of state students have anything to do with it! Not sure why that needs to be said. Clearly this is a problem with the universities themselves and the state of California, as should be obvious. The fact that it’s easier for out of state students to get into SLO is not the “fault” of the students. Not sure why anyone would make that leap.

Thanks for the advice, but I don’t need you to tell me how to spend my time. I have every right to make an observational comment in response to a post on the relative acceptance rates of in state and out of state students.

My kid received an email from SLO today asking their opinion on the year round semester system. If you have strong opinions about it, you might want to fill it out. It is very short.

My daughter got the same email. She will take a look at it. It was from SEM-Strategic Enrollment Services.
