Cal Poly SLO Class of 2028 Freshman Discussion Thread

Although research opportunities are available. D21 participated in one last year.

Ditto.

So do you think CalPoly goes purely by A-G GPA?

At what point do they determine if space is available in the alternate major? Just trying to understand the process. I assumed they checked both majors - or else why lost a second at all?

I do not know the process but in general if student is competitive but does not meet the threshold for their primary major, then admissions can consider them for an alternate major. How they decide if room is available is probably based on their historical enrollment yield data for each major.

That makes sense. Thank you

My daughter also applied to the Psych program, but as her only choice. I’m wishing I had studied Psych so I would know whether to be positive and act like she could be part of that magical 2% or if I should be lowering her expectations and talking more about other schools she’s already been accepted to. :grimacing:

@Aym:

The admit rate for Psychology is not 2% since they admit more students than spots available. So if the yield rate is around 33% (again a guesstimate) then they admit 73x3/3579 to get an estimated 6% admit rate. Better than 2% but still highly competitive.

SLO Freshman selection is linked below. A-G GPA is probably the most important factor for SLO but there is other criteria.

preference is given to local students as well. This is one reason that the results are confusing for many applicants. My kid’s school which has a 30% acceptance rate at Berkeley but is in NorCal has never had a kid accepted at CalPoly.

Same for my kid

Sorry if this has been asked somewhere; I did not go through the many posts. How is the SLO GPA calculated?

9-11th grades for the a-g courses with an 8 semester Honors point cap for eligible courses taken 10-11th. Use the CSU GPA calculator and add 9th grades.

If unsure, send me a PM and I can help.

Thank you.

Do you anticipate decisions today, tomorrow or Monday?

I see the post stating that last year decisions started 3/10/23. The previous year my middle son received his acceptance on 3/10/22.

There is a new link option under “My Apps” titled “Application Status” and a new page which I don’t think was there earlier today.

I do not work in admissions or have any insider information but if I did, I would post decisions on a Friday afternoon and leave for the weekend.

Thank you. Me, too. 2022 was a Thursday night decision, that’s why I was even looking on CC today.

I appreciate all you do and provide here. It is all helpful.

I also see the portal changes as those who have commented above see.
