Hello! Can someone point me to the projected admit rates (specifically for wine and viticulture)? Thank you so much!
Unknowns:
Yield by major
Competitiveness within the major
You can get an estimate by taking the FTF Target multiply by 3 (assuming yield is 33%) and divide by the FTF Apps. Since Wine and Viticulture is not a common major and found at few schools in California, the yield maybe higher so again just an estimate of the admit rate.
Thank you @Gumbymom
hi! already submitted my app so i don’t think i can change much, but i entered my 8th grade bio class (that counts for high school credit and is on my hs transcript) into the csu app; however, i’m hearing that you should only enter foreign language and math classes taken in middle school. is it okay to enter middle school science courses? thanks.
Yes, only FL and Math classes will count for Middle school. You will not be penalized for putting the Biology course there. SLO does not accept changes to coursework after submission.
My son just applied to BRAE. Interested in hearing acceptance stats, feedback on the BRAE major.
College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Science overall admit rate 48%. SLO GPA range 3.88-4.23.
BRAE projected admit rate based on a 39% College yield was 75%.
I want to answer one specific question you asked. You wanted to know if AP Comp Sci Principles is an elective or science. It’s a science. And for the record, AP Comp Sci A is a math. The CSUs and UCs use the same list of A-G requirements and there is a list of what classes at each CA HS count for each requirement.
There is no benefit to your daughter in calling it an elective vs a science since there are no extra points for electives. Even though she’s got 8 science already, go ahead and give her the 9 she has earned. Doesn’t hurt.
Even though I’ve got a DS26 at SLO for CS, I’ve now got a DD28 applying for English. I thought she was mostly interested in SDSU and Northridge and wasn’t considering SLO, but suddenly she has changed her mind about SDSU. She’s concerned about getting swallowed up at SDSU with the large and impersonal classes (I’m not knocking SDSU. That’s where I went and loved it). So now SLO has replaced SDSU in her top 2. A couple of weeks ago I thought she wasn’t even going to apply to SLO, so this is a surprise.
She likes what she’s heard about SLO’s cohort model in the core 7 English Lit classes for the major. If she gets in, she’ll have a tough decision to make. The environment of SLO is so much nicer. But she wants to be an English teacher, and CSUN has a 4-year combined English major/single subject teaching credential program that would allow her to get the credential without having to do a post-grad credential program.
It’s funny, I spent so much time helping my son have the best application he could for SLO’s selection methods that I had a much better (and realistic) sense of his chances than I do my daughter’s. I think she’s got a good chance, especially since English has ~45% acceptance rate compared to CS’s 9%, but I’m not sure.
She’s got a capped SLO GPA of 4.14, UW 3.9. She has taken:
A-2.5
B-4.5 (would have been the full 5, but at some point in the last 2 years creative writing was redesignated a college elective. Grrr!)
C-4
D-2
E-4
F-2
G-3.5
She’s got 16-20 hours of EC with leadership, 1-5 hrs of work, not major related.
I haven’t found a lot of English majors reporting their stats for accepted/WL/rejected over the years.
The good news is I’m far more zen this time around. Partly because it’s my second kid doing this process, but mostly because my son really needed the environment of SLO. My daughter will be fine at whichever school she goes to. A rejection from SLO wouldn’t devastate her; an acceptance would lead to a hard choice.
Hello, quick question I want to do pre-med but am very worried about impacted majors. I have a 3.88 GPA. If it matters my father, grandfather, and grandmother went to SLO. Which majors under the pre-med umbrella are least impacted?
You’ll have to pay for a subscription, but the SLO Tribune publishes a list of least and most impacted majors each year.
https://amp.sanluisobispo.com/news/local/education/article250612749.html
There’s also this:
SLO does not consider legacy in their admission decisions. Also they calculate GPA based on 9-11th a-g course grades with an 8 semester honors point cap for UC approved Honors/AP/IB or DE courses taken 10-11th grades only.
Here is the Freshman selection criteria: Selection Criteria | Cal Poly
You can major in anything from History to Bioengineering to apply to Medical school as long as you take the Medical school pre-requisite courses. Science majors usually have the most overlap with the Medical school requirements that is why Biology, Biochemistry, Microbiology etc… can be popular Pre-med majors.
SLO is an impacted campus meaning that all majors are impacted so there are more qualified applicants than spots available.
When choosing a major as a Pre-med track student, you also need to consider a backup career in case you are not accepted to Medical school so find a major that interests you.
Does any have the data on % of admits and GPA range for Economics at SLO?
He is alternating between Mech engineering and Economics and we know that Mech engineering we would be a reach but was not able to find info for Economics.
No GPA by major for SLO majors but by College. For Economics, which is in the College of Business, SLO GPA admit range was 4.08-4.25 from the Freshman profile page.
From the Target projections, based on a yield of around 30% for the College of Business, the projected admit rate for Economics is around 19%.
Thanks @Gumbymom. Looks like economics also is pretty hard to get into.
Again these are projections but SLO estimates 1182 Freshman applicants for 75 spots in Economics. Last year, they projected 70 spots and enrolled 73.
Mechanical Engineering is around the same estimated admit range. The missing piece is always the GPA admit data and yield by major.
Hi Gumbymom,
I had another question. How important is a 5th year of English for engg majors, does it help that much in admissions? It’s so late in the game and the only way my kid could get that in is to take a CC course in spring. Not looking forward to it, espec w all the other classes . Thank you.
Plenty of admitted students of all majors did not take a 5th year of English.
It is recommended but not required and if the algorithm bonus points are similar to the original MCA criteria published in 2013 along with a maximum bonus point cap, then Science/Math classes make up the bulk of these points, not the extra year of English.
I do not think it is a make or break situation for any applicant.
