Cal Poly SLO Class of 2028 Freshman Discussion Thread

I really don’t need you to tell me what thread is for me. My son has dozens of friends who applied to SLO and as a Californian I take an interest in the schools my taxes support.

This is a check box on the app. Do you have a job, how many hours, and is it major related. No other detail. My daughter could talk about her leadership role at work on her UC apps, but this isn’t considered at SLO.

This is a key point. If 2 students from same HS with equal gpa apply to major in Child Development, the one who worked 3 years at a preschool is more likely to be admitted than the one who worked at the local boba shop.

Agreed. Mine checked yes.

There is a question if you held a leadership role but yes you cannot go into detail.

So that is why an applicant should consider the selection criteria utilized by each school and apply to those schools they feel that the evaluation process will work in their favor.

My daughter had two jobs throughout high school and it made a difference for the other school she applied to. So far not for SLO. Her stats for SLO are competitive based on my research. Her jobs included leading children in an after care program. Since her application was for Biological Sciences it is possible that it was an issue that her job was not biology related.

Naviance also a. seems to be spotty and have some out-of-date data (they’re acceptance rates are definitely two years old as well) uses scatterplots with scores as the X axis. Since SLO doesn’t use scores, it will look pretty random.

Since you don’t know much about SLO and are here watching for your friends (and your tax dollars), maybe this will help clarify what SLO looks for.

From SLO Admissions

Admission is competitive in all majors. While GPA and test scores (when applicable) are important, it is impossible to predict a candidate’s chances by looking at these statistics alone.

Our selection process considers many factors for admission in an objective format in which applicants compete against other applicants within the same major.

Cal Poly SLO Selection Criteria

When we review your application, we consider:

  • Your Intended Program of Study

  • Coursework

  • GPA

  • Extracurricular Activities and Work Experience
Cal Poly takes activities such as work experience, internships, volunteer programs and extracurricular activities into consideration. We are also interested in any leadership roles you may have held in these activities.

  • Other Variables
We consider other factors for admission deemed important to our campus. All candidates are objectively evaluated by the cognitive and non-cognitive variables under our faculty-mandated Multi-Criteria Admission (MCA) process.

Has anyone’s kid heard back and been accepted into the construction management program? I saw a few out of state people respond but haven’t seen any in state people post anything…??

Are there more waves of acceptance decisions yet to be released? Our S24 hasn’t received a decision yet. No indication in the portal and no email. Are we just waiting for a rejection at this point?

Next week will be waitlists and portfolio admits. Then rejections at the end of the month.

You can apply for an exemption. D21 received one for the Spring quarter, IIRC.

Accepted. Liberal arts. I’m from a family of UC grads and current students. So far UCLA, UC Berkeley, UC San Diego, and UC Irvine. I’ve already been accepted to UC Riverside and waiting on UC Santa Cruz. I’m going to visit Cal Poly SLO and excited about it but feeling like maybe I attend a UC to keep up the family tradition? I don’t know. There’s no pressure from the family, they’re excited about Cal Poly. Just my thing. Feeling torn.

For the Open House, do we need to register? It’s not clear from the website and no link to register.

These are all the UCs my family members have already graduated from or are students at.

Barely….compared to USD, and UCSD it isn’t much.
