I got into both of these schools, and I hope to pursue a career in dentistry. I got in undeclared at sdsu and philosophy at cal poly. I know I want to change to biology for cal poly, but I don’t know how difficult that is.
Which school would you recommend in terms of education, social life/party scene, and overall area?
Also, is cal poly considered a party school?
It is easier to change majors at Cal Poly SLO if you are already in the College of Science and Mathematics. Since Biology is one of the most popular majors, you may find it difficult especially if your MCA score was not high enough as a Freshman applicant to get into the major originally. Here is information on how to change majors at SLO. Also, SLO is a dry campus but alcohol does make it’s way into the dorms. Any school can be a party school if you want to party.
What are looking for socially/academically?? Have you visited either campus?

I want a good mix of fun and academics, and while I know both will provide that, I’m somewhat concerned about the reputation of San Diego state. If I go there will it be more difficult to get into dental school? Also, I have visited San Diego but not cal poly.
You definitely need to visit SLO. Very nice campus but a bit isolated and small town but I love it. I have found you either love it or hate it. You can also find plenty of parties at SLO and being a dry campus just makes it more of an incentive for some students to abuse the rules.
Regarding SDSU’s “party” reputation, it is a stigma that still sticks with school but there is definitely not the craziness of the past. Most parties are associated with Greek life on campus and are kept in check by the campus and local police.
Both are good schools with good academic reputations. SDSU has an excellent Pre-professional advising center which you should make use of it you plan to attend Dental School. You want to go to a school where you would have the best chance for a High GPA and opportunities for major related EC’s and volunteer activities. Good Luck and you cannot go wrong with either school.
Great advice! Thanks a lot
