Cal State University Admissions

To get into a cal state school do you have to have a c or better in every class?

My friend has like 3 d’s and 1 f but his csu gpa is a 2.7 and his sat is around 1000/1600

Also do you need Sat 2’s?

With a SAT score of 1000/1600, your friend only needed a 2.38 average to qualify to apply–or with a 2.7, he only needed a 740 score–see the link below:

However, many of the better campuses and the better programs require that you have no worse than a “C” in all courses attempted–although, usually you can retake the course to get this. See this link for campuses and their majors that this applies to:

http://www.calstate.edu/ar/impactioninfo.shtml

Also, keep in mind these are the minimum requirements for acceptance–and usually it takes a bit more to get into the better schools. San Diego State, for example, had about 47,000 applications this year–and Cal State, San Luis Obispo required about a 3.67 to 3.7 UW GPA and average 1800/2400 SAT scores to get in this year.
Best of luck to your friend.

So it doesn’t matter if you have a few d’s as long as you still meet that eligibility requirement.

Also calcruzer maybe you know the answer to this questions.

My friend took alg 2 and got A’s in it both semesters but than switched high schools and took honors precalc…he had an f and had to drop down to alg 2 bc they wouldn’t let him go on to precalc unless he passed alg 2 at their high school. He then dropped alg 2 but had an f for the first semester.

So how will colleges look at this…he got an a in a class and then a year later got an f in the same class for only the first semester. Will they count the f? or will he have to retake it?

Well, I can only tell you how they usually treat it–I can’t speak for every college, obviously.

Most colleges will count the "F"s for all courses taken–even if taken after completing the course at another school. This will be used for computing the grade point average.

As far as what he’ll have to take in college–most schools will give a preliminary test at orientation or shortly after starting college–and will base what level the student will start at in various areas–for example, foreign language, English composition, and mathematics. Other times they will ask that you meet with a counselor or academic advisor who will figure out where the student should start. Lastly, what some schools do is put this in their admission lists–for example, they may say that if you scored below 550 on the verbal part of the SAT you have to take a remedial course in English, but if above that, then you don’t–etc., etc.

So the answer is–it depends on which school he applies to. Check out the packages put out by the schools–usually they are pretty clear on how they treat this stuff.
