Cal Transfer Questions, Help Needed!

37-yr-old, recently back in school at local (Denver) comm college. Couldn’t have cared less in h.s. (however when I put my mind to it, I aced classes, unfortunately that was rare). Extensive life (world travel, work, etc) experiences, also recovering alkie (10 years).

Dream school was always Cal… Always thought that because of h.s GPA (don’t even ask) and fact that I received GED directly out of h.s. (in CA) that I would never stand a chance.
After having been back in college, earning a 4.0 first semester, definitely having the drive and resilience, I see a light at the end of the tunnel…

My question is… is it worth moving from Denver to Berkeley to attend BCC for a year in the hopes for the acceptance to UCB? I am taking only GT courses, they are for CO, however, they look to be the same criteria as the UC system requires. UCB also happens to be the best state school for my major (Anthro)

Any feedback would be appreciated…

If cost isn’t an issue and you really love Berkeley that much, you could definitely make this happen. Going to BCC will greatly improve your chances of getting in pending you establish residency and everything. You have a great GPA for anthro already! Nice work. You’re well on your way. If you want to maximize your chance of acceptance, going to a community college in California is the way to go.

I also had an abysmal high school record, and I received my GED after dropping out. Like you, this was due to a sheer lack of motivation and work ethic. A GED won’t hurt your chances of getting in. If you love Berkeley and anthro, then you’ll get in if you keep up the great work. Like I said, though, your best chance would be at a CCC if you can afford to move here.

Thanks emilsinclair!

Luckily, I do have the funds and availability (no husband or kids) to move there. I just need to know if my CCD credits (all gen. ed.) will transfer… The plan is to move at the end of the fall term of 2010 and go to BCC for a year. Do you know much about credit transfers form OOS CC’s? Also, do you happen to know the language requirements for transfer to UCB?

Thanks to all!

Anne :)

As for the OOS requirements, I honestly have no clue. I’ve lived in SF my whole life lol. If the courses generally match up from your college to UCB, this will probably be considered alright as long as you clarify this with UCB reps/admission in advance.

In regard to the language requirements, you’ll need a year of transferrable English and 2 years of a foreign language. The foreign language can be used from high school to satisfy this.
