“Any self-respecting Harvard grad should distance themselves from such preening, and from the nasty, masturbatory business of admissions in general.”

Obviously, Harvard disagrees about your idea that alum should distance themselves from admissions. In fact, Harvard believes the opposite, which is why Harvard involves so many alum in admissions by having them interview applicants.

Well, after reading all this I’ve changed my mind. I thought my D didn’t have a chance at Harvard. But, hey…she’s never stepped foot on CC, I promise I’ve never “chanced” her either. We both “get” the humor in this post and some of ya say only Harvard-ites would get it. So…I’d say she’s now officially a 100% shoe-in. Woot!

Northstarmom…maybe you can go the other direction… You INCREASE your chances if: …that would be funny to hear too.

@Northstarmom:
I read your original post and showed it to my son (senior in HS, applying also to Harvard, hasn’t had his interview yet) - we had a GREAT laugh !!

Then I read some of the replies and I “almost” feel sorry for you … I was shocked about some of the answers & comments; c’mon guys & gals, let’s not take EVERYTHING dead-serious, ok? I think Northstarmom was spot-on with her comments!
My son is also a little insecure and he’s always nervous about the interviews (like any other 16/17 year old kid), but he didn’t feel insulted by the original post at all !! On the contrary - he thought it might be actually funny to get interviewed by Northstarmom - “even though she would probably BBQ me …” - that was his real comment!!

So, Northstarmom, PLEASE continue with your comments - your style is a most welcome change to what I usually see here in CC.

One more thing: I only felt “almost” sorry for you because I am quite sure that you don’t take those sort of comments too personally … that sort of criticism can’t reach you on your level … ^^ so no need to really feel sorry!

There are a lot of completely unnecessary comments which have been posted in reply to Northstarmom’s brilliant post. I read the first page or so of replies, and was shocked to see how some don’t seem to be able to take the post sportingly.

Northstarmom isn’t uncovering a revolutionary truth to us, she’s just telling us what we already know. Moreover, she’s successfully thrown in some humor to ease the tension that’s obviously building up within most of us applicants to Harvard.

Harvard IS one of the best colleges in the world, and it will obviously be very difficult to get in. I don’t think that Northstarmom, or anyone else for that matter, can be held responsible for that. And it’s not like it’s the end of the world if one doesn’t get in!

I don’t think that there’s any reason to be bitter, especially to someone who calls a spade a spade. There’s already enough bitterness in the world, without the future alums of the world’s best university adding to it! Peace!

Come onnn, guys, let’s ease off on Northstarmom. She’s a Harvard graduate, but she’s still human and makes mistakes. So what if her joke failed? It’s happened to us all!

Oh, haha, I didn’t really have an opinion about it either way. I only meant that it stirred up great controversy - about 9 pages worth of it; and good jokes don’t usually do that.

It’s because the typical CCer is too wound up and proud to have a Harvard Grad insinuate that they have a low chance of admissions into Harvard. It’s not an issue with Nothstar’s post itself.

Hi, I m frm India and i m gng to apply 4 pg med. prog @harvard…Would u plz estimate my chances??? Are international students nt accepted easily.???..plz reply!!!
thx 4 ur hlp

It’s just hard to estimate the chances. The chances are really just what you think it is because the acctually result will just turn out to be getting in or not. The actual chance is 100% or 0. Besides, it’s paradoxical to find big trends of Harvard students like what their SAT and GPA are and calculate the chance while Harvard itself is seeking unique and distinctive students.

I don’t think Northstarmom was trying to estimate chances. In fact, she was pointing out that there’s no way that you could. I appreciated the satire :)
