Calculating the range of a bow/arrow system.

<p>I’ve been trying to figure this out, but I don’t know why. I did the experiment and predicted a range of about 150 m. I used the work/kinetic energy theorem and then using the calculated initial velocity in the range equation. The arrow actually went about 50 meters. Other than the basics (air resistance, human error), is there a reason that the actual range is so far off? Thanks.</p>

<p>There is a square root missing from the equation for v.</p>

<p>Does your force draw equation start at 0?</p>

<p>Even for a modern compound bow, the energy stored should be much less than the draw length times the peak force. E.g., for a 30 inch draw and a peak draw weight of 35 pounds, I would expect the stored energy to be maybe 35 foot pounds?</p>

<p>The transfer of energy from the bow to the arrow is not perfect. It should be pretty high, though, unless the arrows are very light. Perhaps 85%.</p>
