Any suggestions on how to improve doing math word problems? We’re doing a lot of them in calculus, and I’m having tremendous difficulties just understand what to do/how to do it/ what step to take.

Have any advice?

My advice… Take Statistics.

I have two pieces of rationale for this:

1) Statistics is more of a social studies math class. (High School level, anyway) Most of it is word problem based. You’ll get so much practice reading them that calculus word problems will give you no trouble.

2) If calculus doesn’t work out… Stats is more fun anyway.

But seriously: There is no set way to get better at word problems. The only thing I can suggest is either make a table of all the information you know, draw a picture, or copy off the guy next to you.

Just practice, practice and more practice. Most of the world problems, if you do them enough times, you will see that it’s a similar question with just different information given.
