California Highway 1 Reopens

After three years, the road has been reopened ahead of schedule. They basically had to reinforce the side of a sand dune and level off the top. Businesses up and down the road are very relieved. The before and after pictures are impressive.

We did that trip in 2014 before you had to detour for any part. It was gorgeous, but I’m glad we did it south to north. I don’t think I could do it the other way.

We missed it on our trip from Paso Robles up to Monterey. We’re so disappointed that we couldn’t drive much of it.

I hadn’t heard that it reopened. Thanks for sharing.

Interesting. We’re in Pismo Beach and will be headed back to Washington next month. I haven’t made that drive in a long time and it might be time to do it again.

We drove it once but when we tried to drive it more recently, it was under repair. It IS lovely but very susceptible to weather and erosion. The last time when we tried driving it, we had to cancel our reservations that was for a hotel along the route because we literally couldn’t get to it from where our car was and had to find a different place to stay.

We had to plan our 40th Anniversary road trip to Monterey around the closure. The last time we did the drive was maybe 20 years ago.

We drove up highway 1 a bit today.
