They are a bit low, but high enough to make you have so-so chances. You’re OOS, which counts against you, although OOS is generally NY/NJ/PA area. I’d assume your chances increase since you’re from CA, but who knows.

I’d say you have a good shot, because of the geographical factor. Not many applicants or students from California, so they like to diversify the students and that make you have a very good chance.

usually large public school like UMCP just look at grades and SAT scores. Only if you’re outstanding at other categories it would benefit you. Your GPA is Okay (slightly below average) but your SAT score is too low.

Are you on the admission committee? Do you make the decisions? If not, then you have no idea what you’re talking about. I had friends while I was at Maryland who scored in the low 1000s from NJ and they were not even in Freshmen First, they were admitted for Fall 2007.

Bruins you know I like you, but UMDCP has become increasingly harder ea yr. Many yrs ago OOS people used it as a safety thta is definetely not true anymore. Can they get in with those scores, I would think so,esp. since they are from Cali. The difference from 07 to 08 was a 10% decrease in acceptance chances. UMDCP is now ranked by USNWR as a very selective school. It ranks 18th in the nation and 53rd in the world. It is no longer the pay my app fee and get accepted

Just remember last yr UMDCP had over 28K applicants for 4K spots…only @1250 go to OOS. The numbers are there, but you need to be the best that you can be for OOS…this is true for almost every OOS.

I would say in, just not sure for the journalism major, because you have no media background, i.e. school paper.

OOS aacceptance varies not only on the state, but also your intended major. The more comp the major the better stats you need.

wow, i started some controversy haha. I am interested in broadcast journalism so i thought that being involved in the mass media production for two years was experience. The only reason why i didnt join the print journalism class was because the teacher was a complete jerk. It would not have been a pleasant experience. i appreciate all of the responses!

if i dont get accepted into the philip merrill college of journalism, but i do get accepted into UMDCP, what major would they place me in? and could i reapply for the journalism school spring semester?

They would place you in Letters and Sciences as undecided. I’m not sure if you could reapply. It may be like Business and have to wait till the end of your sophomore year to apply.

would it be advisable to send in a DVD of all of my “journalistic work.” i have anchored several news broadcasts for my school and community. would they even look at it?
