Hello, I am a current senior this year and will apply for the nursing majors.
I have an unweighted 3.9 GPA and weighted 4.4 in the first semester of junior year and 4.2 in the second semester. This year, I will take ap bio, AP Stat, ap calc BC, and AP Psychology. I volunteered in a local hospital, and food bank, and had experience working at a YMCA. Also, I am the number one single player on my high school team and received a few awards. I am the founder of the International Food Club and president of the Asian Alliance club this year. I will apply to California schools including UCLA, UCI, SDSU, CSUF, and USF. I really want to get into these schools and need advice on what activities I can do to increase my acceptance rate.
Sounds like you’ve done and are doing a lot.
They will be evaluating your recurs through Junior year and UCs even less in GOA calculation.
Continue to be the best you. Adding now for sake of admissions isn’t going to help.
Ensure your list is balanced. Nursing is tough. Add some private or OOS schools. If budget is a concern, many are affordable including Hawaii and New Mexico which offer WUE tuition. CSUB may also be worth a look.
Best of luck in your journey.

Some of your honors classes in HS might not be considered honors by the UCs. Look up which courses at your HS receive a UC honors GPA bump by looking up your HS courses here.
There probably isn’t time to start new activities, nor will new activities necessarily help - colleges look for commitment and impact, both of which take time and generally can’t be demonstrated at the last minute. Right now, the best thing you can do is start planning your applications - how to package the activities you’ve been doing and drafting your personal statement, PIQs, and supplementary essays.
Are you a California resident?
Yes, I am.
UCI and UCLA nursing majors are highly selective. In 2023, UCI admitted a bit more than 1% of applicants (70 out of 5,870), and the admits’ 25th-75th percentile GPA (UC-recalculated weighted-capped) range was 4.28-4.33. The same year, UCLA admitted a bit less than 1% of applicants (48 out of 5,906), and the admits’ GPA range was 4.24-4.30.
UCI’s progression requirement is a 2.75 GPA in nursing courses, 2.0 GPA overall, with C or higher in all prerequisite and nursing courses. No more than one repeat of a nursing course is allowed.
UCLA’s progression requirement is a 2.0 GPA, C- or higher in all courses, and C or higher in Writing I, Biostats100A, and all nursing courses. No more than one repeat of a nursing course is allowed.
SDSU’s 2024 nursing admit rate was 4.8% and CSU Fullerton is comparable if not lower.
SDSU does not consider EC’s in their application review.
- Nursing: You must earn a B or better grade in high school intermediate algebra, biology, and chemistry with lab courses for consideration. If AP or IB level courses are taken in these areas, you must earn a B or better grade in the course. Preference is given to applicants who have taken and earned strong grades in science and mathematics courses. Review our Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing - Direct Entry web page for more information.
CSU Fullerton has a more comprehensive evaluation which includes your academics, LOR’s, Essays and an Interview.
You appear to be on track but California direct admit BSN programs are tough for every applicant. Definitely consider a few 2+2 programs as backups such as CSU Long Beach, Chico State and San Bernardino to name a few. You might also want to consider Cal State San Marcos and Azusa Pacific BSN programs.
Good luck to you.
