I’m not convinced this is applicable to audition-based programs (eg for ballet Indiana is a super reach). D18 applied to 13 and was admitted to 6 (of which only 2-3 were desirable), despite having very strong academics (4.0UW/35 ACT/9 APs with 8 5s).
If you are determined to double major as she was, it makes sense to pick somewhere that isn’t extremely tough on academic grading, so taking a lot of classes doesn’t mess up your GPA (she graduated with a 3.93 GPA). Also, her merit offers (which were great - she ended up with a full ride) were almost all based on academics with very little from artistic talent, and that seems to be common.
