Call from the deans of the school

Did anyone get a call from the deans of their choice school? Like, I got one from the humanities school.

I don’t know, Rice is definitely trying to stack on these perks (they waived my travel to Rice for Owl Days and will waive my enrollment free if I go). I was just wondering are these types of things normal, meaning does Rice go out of its way to make sure once you’re enrolled you feel a part of the school, they try to really connect with students? I feel community is a big part of my decision, with my other choices being UT and Duke.

Financially, Duke and Rice will cover all expenses (with Rice giving me a Trustee), but Duke definitely has its own allure. What school would you guys prefer?

They’re very nice perqs for merit aid champs.
My son had the same decision two years ago, and has never regretted choosing Rice over Duke. For one thing, at Duke, all the freshmen are housed on East Campus about 1.5 miles from main campus and depend on buses to get to classes. This is very different than living in residential colleges where upperclassmen are close by to suggest professors, classes, restaurants. Wakeup, I think it will be fun when you visit-- comparing the community life at two schools that are waiting for you.
schools that really want you to sign up!

How did you get it waived? Did you ask?

It was automatic. I don’t know if it was because of Trustee or the low family income or the combination of both, but there was just a letter about the waivers…

I am a student a Rice, not Duke, so keep that in mind:

If what you’re wanting is a strong and cohesive community, I think Rice is the clear choice simply because of the residential colleges. I’ve been a student at an ordinary public state school and Rice (I transferred), and in my opinion the residential college system is something pretty special.

Both Rice and Duke are fantastic academically. To distinguish between them academically you’ll need to get down to the nitty-gritty details of your particular path of study.

My son was admitted to Rice but he got no call from anybody and no merit scholarship and nothing waived except the application fee a few months ago. You’re a top candidate because of the Trustee scholarship - congratulations!

As far as which I’d choose - Rice in a heartbeat. The same with my son. He didn’t even apply to Duke.

I got a call from someone from natural sciences. I also got a scholarship :)

I got a call from a physics profressor representing the natural sciences. I creeped on his Rice webpage and it looks like he’s a half-Asian New Zealander!??! lol

Dr. Chan! I just talked to him for a while at dinner tonight. He’s an awesome professor and all-around great guy.
