Calling all Classicists!!!

I’m still in my second year at a cc and want to study the classics. My campus doesn’t offer Latin (shocker I know) I’m just wondering if Loeb Classical Library is a good starting place for my latin endevors. I’m also using Wheelock’s Latin as a begining text. Thanks for your help.

I’m self-learning Latin as well. I find Wheelock’s to be extremely dry and frustrating because it throws difficult translation exercises to you without truly building your vocabulary and grammar skills first. I prefer the Reading Latin set by Cambridge University Press. Anyway, if you’re sticking with Wheelock’s, do the test exercises at the back before attempting the translations. If you want to start on reading Latin, you may try a text for beginners or a simpler piece like Caesar’s De Bello Gallico.

I find studying Latin independently to be much more efficient and enjoyable than learning it in class. Firstly, you get to take your own sweet time to make sure you’ve mastered the basics before getting on to more advanced grammar. Secondly, you are more careful when translating because you’re more afraid of getting it wrong. This deeper analysis sharpens your mind.

cool. thanks!
