Calling all history buffs...

Can you think of an instance in history when faction and instability allowed a dictator to gain popularity and rise to power?

This is not an essay prompt, haha. Just making connections :)

Napoleon and Stalin both do, in a way. After periods of instability, in these cases the French and Russian revolutions, people start to look for stability in a strong, dominating leader.

hitler, to an extent
lots of instability, and mild factions within the nazi party

I guess you could include Gaddafi’s initial rise to power. Fueled by strong nationalism and anger over Libya’s defeats against Israel in the late 60’s, a group of army cadets led by Gaddafi (and much support from most of the country’s citizens), successfully managed a bloodless coup, abolished the Idris monarchy, which led to Gaddafi starting his reign of terror.

Interesting points, thank you all for sharing!

Def. hitler.

It happens all the time with friendships and relationships.
