Two things: Boston will be even harsher winters than the locations she’s considering, and sh really, really wants to be able to take science classes with labs.
I know…there’s so many great schools and cities in red states-but those cities are still governed by legislatures that do not value women or Black people. It’s not a risk we’re willing to take in these times. We don’t have a false sense of security in blue states, but her rights are less under direct attack.
My musician kid just graduated from conservatory in Philly and has done some subbing at Temple (classical for the most part, but some gigs with the contemporary music program).
Just wanted to say he loves Philadelphia. It’s a great city for a college age kid with decent food and entertainment at low cost. He has had good experiences with the Temple students and faculty.
The other great thing about that part of the east coast is it is easy to hop on a bus or train for gigs. He plays in DC and Baltimore as well. His goal is to not need a car until at least the age of 30. ![]()
Denton and DFW area have a great music scene in general. UNT music students do not lack for opportunity to gig and perform in the area. My son was voice and cello. There were more opportunities than he could take.
We are very much looking forward to visiting next month! Especially for the food
!
Just sent you a PM. Look for the little envelope icon in the top right corner of your screen.
Has she considered New School?
We spent 5 days in Oberlin and went to student performances. The student body was so supportive of each other. We felt very welcome.
Samara Joy graduated from Purchase a few years ago and more or less immediately won a grammy. Then another one. My son spent 5 semesters in high school playing in the jazz combos there including two semesters with a very talented vocalist who loved my son because he did not play over her. Conversations with her father indicated she was doing well there. Search on YouTube for Purchase Jazz, and you should find a few good videos of her.
Also, the New Jersey schools, William Paterson and Montclair State have killer jazz programs.
How is it going with jazz applications? We are gearing to apply next year. So curious to hear jazz stories and journeys from this year’s jazz pool.
She’s settled on applying to UCLA,USC, Temple and Peabody. It’s been fun exploring all of them, but nearly impossible to hear from anyone studying jazz, let alone jazz voice. Every student tour guide has been able to say, oh yeah, my roommate/friend studies jazz. They love it!
Anyway, excited to get everything submitted before Thanksgiving so that week is a true break.
Congrats! Must be a huge relief to get the school selection finalized. Any pre-screen victories and audition war stories? Looking forward to your admission updates too!

We have about 13 or 14 schools on my son’s list….he’s jazz guitar. We have about half of his applications in. He’s already had 1 in-person audition (at FSU) and 2 more coming up in the coming weeks (FIU and Berklee). Waiting on pre-screen results from UM Frost and UNT. He’s also taping his remaining pre screen videos tonight and on Sunday so we should be good to apply to the remaining schools at that point.
Best of luck from another jazz guitar mom! We will start this up again for grad school a year from now! Went by so fast
Woke up to the good news she’s passed the Temple prescreen!
Has anyone heard back on EA from Frost yet?
Last year my son heard back on Jan 24th from Frost. MADE guitar program. He was deferred and then accepted in RD with a scholarship.
I’m talking about for the prescreen results. Auditions for EA are 12/6 so hoping they announce who needs to be there soon.
Oh! That makes sense!!
He heard about EA prescreens on Nov 14th last year. So it should be very soon. I would bet today
I remember it being a small window to arrange travel, but should be soon!
