They finally emailed last night. We got through the prescreen! ![]()
Who would like to school me on the repertoire list? Please.
It should be pretty simple. I would group based on type of song….like Ballad vs Blues etc and list the song. I think some schools want to know if you’ve done solos and stuff so definitely make sure you know what each school is looking for. Many literally just want a list of songs they’ve played.
Has anyone heard back from UNT prescreen who applied EA?
Everything is submitted! First step in the waiting game…
Curious: what songs did your musicians choose to audition with if they had a “and anything contrasting” requirement on top of the selections that were defined by style or title? i.e USC said to sing this song, then this or that song, as well as this or that song, and then a song of your choice that contrasts, such as Latin, etc.
My vocalist used Agua de Beber, and Mr. Eclectic by Laufey.
I can’t remember ALL of his songs (14 schools and not all of them had songs we could reuse), but some I remember are:
Polka Dots and Moonbeams
Corcovado
Prelude to a Kiss
Sonnymoon For Two
Someday My Prince Will Come
These are fun songs!
Thankfully, she was able to overlap a few songs, but it’s only across 4 schools. The wildcard songs were fun for her to choose from songs she knows and loves, outside of the prescribed songs.
I would love to hear from other jazz bassists (upright). Awaiting auditions at DePaul, Loyno, and New School. Also waiting for Temple decision. Wondering what others are thinking/feeling at this point!
Oh, Temple. Why are you taking so long?
Have you guys heard? My son was moved to RD. The email said for academic reasons, but may just be the only kind of deferral template they have. His app still hasn’t had “an initial review” per his portal. Sighhhh.
Oh, wow! That seems so odd. Haven’t heard anything…![]()
Weird! My son got an email at 6p EST. No updates anywhere else.
Hey Friends! Temple EA was supposed to come out by January 10 and as I shared, we heard nothing. So I had my daughter email Boyer’s admissions this morning to check her status. They emailed back and said she has been admitted and the Temple portal will be updated!
Who’s child has had a sample lesson? Any tips? Finally bagged one!
Honestly handle it just like any other lesson.
Checking in with all the jazzheads. How are your auditions, applications and !admission decisions! are going? Any tips and lessons to share about jazz auditions seasons and mental prep for both the whole application and admission season to jazz programs so far? Which jazz schools and audition experiences you seriously loved this far (and the opposite)? My kid is getting ready to apply next year.
10 Auditions down, 1 more to go! He’s currently in at FSU, FIU, UNT, Michigan State, Berklee, and UM Frost. Waiting on USC (Thornton), Oberlin, Northwestern, Peabody, and then MSM (that’s his last audition). As for tips….get a binder and have dividers for each school. It really helped us stay organized. Some schools are very specific on what you have to play and others leave it wide open. Reuse those required songs for those schools that leave it up to your choice. His experiences have been sooooooo different from school to school. Surprisingly we really liked Oberlin’s audition day. They provided lunch and they had you sit in on a rehearsal where if you brought your instrument you could even play. Then they had a jam session after that with current students which was great. My son really loved Peabody in-person. It’s a very old school but it has a very unique charm to it. USC is his favorite college campus followed by Northwestern lol UM Frost, Michigan State, and FSU were all very organized. Our concern with Northwestern is that it’s a very small program with all of 36 students. Could be great for some students and just a challenge for others.
So my son is jazz guitar and almost every school did have an amp in the room for the audition, but Northwestern didn’t. We thankfully asked about it while we were waiting and they were able to get one for him but it was the one trip where we didn’t bring his amp with us. We have a Pelican case for his amp so that it can travel safely on the plane. It’s a pain to take but his guitar instructor (who teaches at UM Frost) told him that he should make every effort to bring his own amp if possible so that he can guarantee what his sound would be like. Go figure that trip to Northwestern was the ONE trip where we didn’t bring it because we were jumping from Northwestern to Oberlin all during the same week and wanted to avoid another thing to travel with.
Hi, new to this site. Our daughter is currently a junior with plans to be a Jazz voice major. Recently completed a visit to Blair with a sample lesson. Upcoming visits include UCS with a sample lesson/UNC Chapel Hill/ U Miami with a sample lesson/Peabody.
Has anyone used a professional college counselor .
I honestly don’t think you need a professional counselor. For me, a binder with dividers allowed us to stay extremely organized. My son’s list changed a lot between the end of junior year and the beginning of senior year. I don’t think a professional counselor could have helped us. The key is to maximize prescreen videos, many schools will give you the ability to choose….do them early because let’s face it all of our kids are perfectionists.
