calling all mattress pros

Congrats on your purchase…sweet dreams!

You’ll sleep well tonight!

Keep us posted. My knockoff QVC Tempurpedic probably won’t last long and I’ll be in the market.

Packmom - make sure you measure the thickness of the mattress so you know what size sheets to get. The saleswoman at the store measured my pockets at 16" and told me not to go smaller than 17" on the sheets - to leave room for shrinking as well as that you don’t want to smother your mattress. She said you don’t want to get a nice fluffy soft mattress and then smash it down tight with sheets. I wound up getting the 18" ones just to be safe. I wanted black sheets and went from store to store trying to find them. The only place I could find with black 18" sheets was wal-mart, and that was after dragging my boyfriend to like eight different department stores.

You’ll enjoy it!!

You and your DH won’t regret this. A good night’s sleep is the secret to a happy life!

I have had a 100% latex mattress (from Sears) for almost 40 years and have always loved it.
Recently we bought a new Beauty Rest World Class mattress in pillowtop for our vacation house. It is absolutley fabulous. Very supportive, pretty firm - no sinking in deep, very firm on the sides even when you lean on the edge. I love it and find it tough to get out of bed. And I’m a bad back guy - bulging disk.
I went to get the same mattress for home but found it wouldn’t work – too thick for my four poster bed – maybe 13 inch mattress as compared with the 6" latex mattress I have now would put me too high in the air and too high up on my headboard. Getting a low profile box spring won’t work well because it would put the mattress well below the wooden sides and complicate making the bed.
Anyone have a great mattress 6-9" thick to recommend?
(If you don’t have this problem, try the Beautyrest I recommend above.)

The model we bought is a Simmons Beautyrest Cape Columbia model. We bought it at the Mattress Firm. We tried out what appeared to be a very similiar model at Macy’s but it had a different name…still Simmons Beautyrest but called Angelique visco super plush. The guy at Mattress Firm said that visco was the same as memory foam which is apparantly different than latex (I learned so much about mattresses yesterday!).

The one we bought is a pillowtop with latex which the MF guy said was better. He said the latex would hold up longer than the visco/memory foam. Could have just been a sales pitch to sell a more expensive mattress! To us, the latex pillowtop felt a little more firm than the memory foam pillowtop.

Fendergirl, thanks for the tip about the sheets. This new mattress measures just a little over 16 inches so I’ll take your advice and look for 18" deep ones. I hate having to fight to get the the sheets over the corners of the bed.

We got the low profile box. H was a little worried it would be too low but when I came home and measured found that it will actually be a little higher than what we have now because the mattress is so much thicker. We have a sleigh bed that sits up kinda high anyway. It’s a good thing I’m tall or I may have needed a step stool to get in bed!

It is supposed to be delivers this a.m. Guess I better go sheet shopping. I think I’ll buy new pillows while I’m at it for a whole fresh new bed.
Wow, I can hardly wait to go to bed tonight. My S’s high sch. football team has their first game tonight. He’s the starting Defensive End. I’ so excited for him. I’ll be doing lots of whooping and yelling so my new bed will feel like heaven when I fall in it tonight (I hope). Thanks again ya’ll.

One of the reasons we bought the Tempurpedic was that our bed is an OLD very high bed. We would have had an issue with increased height due to a thicker mattress…never mind the cost of new linens (and by the way…I happen to LIKE my quilt which would not have covered the thick pillowtop mattress). The Tempurpedic is the thickness of a regular mattress, and it’s “box platform” the same as a standard box spring. Ta da…worked perfectly in the bed AND with the old sheets, bedspreads, mattress pad, and quilt. But it IS a different kind of mattress, and it’s not for everyone.

I’m glad you measured it. My mom got a new mattress a year or so ago and forgot to measure it prior to buying new sheets. She went to Kohl’s and bought “deep pocket sheets” and came home with only was like 13 inches and she needed the bigger ones as well. I seemed to notice that the bigger the pockets, the less of the selection. We went to store after store after store. Honestly, the place with the biggest selection turned out to be Ollies… except they didn’t have black.

And I know what you mean about it being so high. I didn’t get the low profile box spring so it seems like my bed is crazy high off the floor. I don’t have a head board or anything like that. I saw this platform type bed at a store which I may look into once I move out - where you don’t need the box spring… I think that will lower it considerably. And I’m fairly short, so right now I DO feel like I need a step stool when getting into my bed! My boyfriend is 6 ft 3 so no problem there but I give it a good leap!

packmom, how is the new bed? and sheets?

Packmom, We’re going to Mattress Firm in NC on Friday to get a full set for DS. We aren’t looking for “fancy”. I guess they have their own brand and we’ll look at that. Also they sputter about clearance items. Did you see any of that???

The new bed is heaven. I slept until 8:00 this a.m which I haven’t done in a long time because my back ache usually wakes me up. Even my H, who had said the old mattress was still fine for him agreed that the new one was great. He’s usually an early riser and slept later than usual today too.

The 18" inch sheets are the perfect fit. They were a little roomy on the edges straight out of the pkg. but once I washed/dried them they shrunk up and fit perfectly. Thanks again Fendergirl for the tip. Otherwise I might have bought the 16 or 17" size (which the store had way more selection in) which would have been too small after washing/drying.

thumper1…I’m pm’ing you about the mattress store.

i’m glad it worked out for you. mine were a bit loose when i put them on but fit perfect after washing and drying them.

i hope you sleep well on it from now on :)

i sleep much better on my new bed, the only problem is it’s so cozy I dont want to get out of it in the morning!

this thread needs to be reviewed also for us mattress shoppers…

It’s been almost a year, but we did go to Mattress Firm and we got DS a full size mattress and box spring…their brand…for about $320. In addition we got a frame for $50. But listen to this…we asked if they had a dresser and they did but it was $499. But the guy said “let me check the warehouse, sometimes we have clearance ones”. I told DS not to get his hopes up because even at 1/2 price we weren’t going to buy it. Well the guy came back…they had the dresser for $75. I figured for that price it had to be missing a drawer. Well…it was a “scratch and dent” and the scratch was on the BACK of one of the front legs and the fixed it before they delivered it. Sold!!

We were there at 9 a.m and the bedroom stuff was delivered before 4:00 the same afternoon.

A year later and DS says it’s still fine.

Almost one year later and still loving my Simmons latex top mattress. It’s the kind that doesn’t move when your mate flips over in bed. I never realized how many times I woke up per night until I got this bed. I rarely wake up in the night now.

I will say that the gortex mattress pad the salesman sold us on was a piece of junk. It was sooo hot to sleep on. We both woke up sweating even with the air conditoner and ceiling fan on. That thing had to go and quick. What a waste of money. I bought a reg. mattress pad from Marshall’s and have slept like a dream ever since.

You know thumper, I had the same problem a few years ago. I went and bought a memory foam topper that is about 2" thick for the old mattress. I now sleep so well, no more back pain! The topper cost around $220 here for me but would be considerably cheaper in the states. This is just a tip for those thinking of buying something to help with a bad back. A friend of mine recommended this option.

The beds at the (newer/ better?) Sheraton hotels are awesome. And I think you can buy them too! They are making a big point of their mattresses – and there’s info in the room about how you can get one for your house.

At least you could a few years ago … I didn’t, but remember thinking about it.

(I had been to a small convention at a Sheraton. Everyone came to breakfast talking about what an incredible bed they’d slept in!)

Timely for me that this thread was resurrected; ever since returning from a Hyatt a couple of weeks ago, my own mattress, which I’d always thought was comfortable, has felt stiff and lumpy. So I think I’ll be in the market soon and appreciate all the advice/experience!

I’m reading with interest. We bought a new mattress 2 years ago. I read as much as I could online. We couldn’t try in person because I was buying from Germany, in preparation for coming home - needed the mattress to be here ASAP. I ended up getting a queen size set - a Regency pillow top from Simmons. It cost $1000, so we won’t be buying a new one anytime soon.

For the first few months I loved it. It was soooo comfortable. But after about 6 months, I realized that there were indentions on either side where we slept. The middle is higher. I hate being forced into one spot! For some reason, my side is deeper than my H’s - he is heavier than me, but perhaps I sleep still-er.

Up to this point, we had a double bed, and I looked forward to having more room - but the indentations force me into a small spot or I feel like I’m sleeping uphill or something. It’s pillow on only one side, so it’s not like we can flip it. If anybody has any knowledge of how to fluff a pillow top let me know. I assume it’s foam. Sometimes if H is gone, or if I take a nap during the day, I will sleep in the middle, trying to flatten it. It’s not working yet.

I feel very cheated, spending so much money, and being stuck with this for the next 10 years or so. I know I won’t be buying another Simmons.
