binx - the 10 year old we will be replacing is a pillowtop and I am trying to avoid that again - for the flipping reason…you can at least rotate it which will put your husband on your side and your heads where your feet were…but won’t do anything about the middle…

Thanks packmom for reviving this issue. Like you, I’m now an early riser because of the backache. And I’m always exhausted because of tossing and turning. My husband says I constantly flip myself which wakes him as well. Our mattress is not that old and was pretty expensive, but I just don’t think I can take it anymore. We have some sort of Simmons pillowtop…maybe about 6(?) years old and I curse that thing every morning. Prior to this, we had a very firm mattress that I loved and my husband hated. I think the poofy pillowtop purchase was a knee-jerk opposite reaction to that old firm mattress.

We are seriously considering the Sleep Number because of our different requirements. But I’m also considering the Tempur-pedic. My only worry with that one is sleeping hot. This is hot and humid Houston after all. I’ve heard conflicting stories on this though…the sales person at Mattress Firm says ‘sleeping hot’ is not an issue, but I’ve heard complaints.

binx - interestingly our hated pillowtop is Simmons as well…but pillow on both sides so we can flip it. It’s a king and heavy as a truck though. We had friends who had a one-sided pillowtop they couldn’t stand, but couldn’t return. They sent it in to have the pillow top removed. Not sure HOW they did this, but I know it can be done. They loved the mattress after that. Perhaps you can contact Simmons for advice?

Thanks memphismom. Interestingly, we’ve been at a Marriott and a Weston within the last year. I don’t remember the Westin mattress making much of an impression with me, though I did like the linens in the brochure. But the Marriott mattress was very nice and my husband and I both commented that we had a great night’s sleep. We were exhausted…in Mobile, at the approximate halfway point of our drive back from Chapel Hill, after three days of moving things from storage into a dorm room, so that may have been a factor as well. ;)

Didn’t remember feeling the least bit uncomfortable sleeping on that foam mattress, so something to consider!

moving up for a new mattress shopper.
