Calling All Texans

How many of you remember Dr. Red Duke? For years he did a TV spot with medical updates from UT Houston Health Sciences Center. He had a handlebar mustache and was/is quite a character.

He was the speaker at UT Houston Medical School graduation yesterday. He is still quite a character and I was really excited to hear him. He still teaches at the med school (trauma surgery) and is truly amazing.

On a side note, the whole thing was a real wake-up call to me about the lack of need to attend a prestigious undergraduate school if your goal is medical school.
UT Houston is a great medical school, and every graduate’s undergrad school (as well as where they are going for residency) was listed. There is a spattering of what we on this forum would consider elite schools, but the overwhelming number of doctors did their undergrad work at Texas state schools- and, in a large number of instances, not the flagship schools. There were lots from A&M, a few from Rice, lots from Baylor but also UT-Brownsville, Southwest Texas State, Prairie View A&M, Angelo State, Texas S&M Commerce… The residency programs to which they are proceeding are awesome.
So much for “my life is over if I don’t go to a top 20 college”.

Oh my gosh… I remember him. I’m amazed he’s still alive?

If I ever needed a trauma doctor in Houston, he’d be the one I want, though.

OK, I must assume that the “Texas S&M Commerce” was a typo, but I’m still ROFL.

^^Oops. Definitely a typo!

I love Dr. Red Duke! I can hear his voice in my head right now. He has some seriously good common sense advice for us all.

My wife (TAMU class of '82) recalls Dr. Duke from her days as a med student. There are TV personality docs that I would never let treat me, but according to my wife, Dr. Red is the real deal.

I remember him. I wonder how old he is!

And if I had to live in Commerce for four years, I would think S&M might be a plausible diversion.

I absolutely remember him! I didn’t realize he was still around and practicing. He was definitely larger than life and the real deal.

Here’s some info I found on him: [TRAUMA RESEARCH CENTER](http://utsurg.uth.tmc.edu/trauma/events.html)
