Does anyone know how high the level of skill is for getting recruited to CalTech baseball (average velo of pitchers, etc.)? Also, does that help with admissions to the school?
RHP needs to sit in low 80’s, touch mid 80’s. Lefties, maybe high 70’s. S was offered full support and he sat at 83/84. He was also a position player though with good batting metrics. This site has a good summary of key metrics. https://www.tpcollegeshowcase.com/evaluation-reference-information.html
Even with full support, based on a 34+ACT, 4.0 UW GPA, but nothing beyond some regional level math awards, the coach and the AD only put his chances at 50/50. S did not apply so no result to share.
Athletic skill has little to no pull with the admissions department at Caltech. You could be throwing 95mph and have a wicked slider and it wouldn’t move the needle unless you are a superb student, show an unusually strong aptitude for STEM, and are from a place like Fargo, Butte, or Pierre.
To say that Caltech is not known for it’s Baseball team would be an understatement.
Rumor has it that Caltech is trying and has improved of late. In the olden days, the rumor was that the coach would recruit by asking the first week of classes which of the freshmen knew which hand to put the glove on.
They are no longer the pushovers they used to be and are actually competitive in their division. I think you’d have to be a very good club baseball player to be recruited these days.
