Cambridge or MIT

uh-loo-minh-ummmmmm

as for the op I would go to cambridge…

So @Yank, how does the college ranking work? Is Magdalene considered inferior in comparison to Trinity and the others?

I know Trinity has a lot more money, but I am sure that doesn’t affect the quality of supervisions.

Trinity has some really brilliant mathematicians. In fact, the guy who interviewed me for maths was a Fields Medalists. So had I gotten into Trinity, would the supervisions be led by professors or grad students?

If by professors, then am I at a disadvantage? Since I don’t recall seeing a lot of maths professors from Magdalene.

bump 10 char

^^ There is something called the “Tomkins Table” that ranks the colleges in order to academic preformance i.e. what percentages of people get firsts etc. Trinity is at the top of the 2009 one, Magdlene is 8th. Supervisions are done by professors and occasionally doctoral students (but note the dons test out the doctoral students so that if you get him/her for a supervision they have been approved by dons as fantastic), you aren’t at a disadvantage at Magdelene in terms of number of professors because it is smaller the ratio of professors to students remains the same. The reason Trinity Maths is regarded as amazing is because that seems to be where mathematical elite of Britian congregate to, a statistic is that from the British IMO teams more former members went to university at Trinity College Cambridge than all the other colleges in Oxbridge combined!

Cambridge is definitely stronger in the field than MIT so Cambridge I guess.

Wow. Mathematical elite? Man, I wish i got into Trinity…

Some of the professors at Trinity are brilliant.
The professor who interviewed me for Trinity was a Fields Medalist. Now I won’t be able to get supervision from a Trinity maths professor.

Not shamelessly bumping this thread to get more feedback.

Oxford. :D

^ LOL. Nicely played.

I also got in Caltech, so what are your thoughts on their math program?

And I have yet to hear back from Harvard, Princeton, Yale and Stanford.

Though I doubt, I’ll get in all, hypothetically, which would be better for math?

As of now, due to all the helpful comments which i am super grateful for, I’m starting to lean towards Cambridge.

^ Was your interviewer Prof Gowers? He did my interview as well, he scared the bejesus out of me and looked like an aging superhero lol… I also got into Caltech, but I have no idea about their math program.

I thought about Oxford once… and then I just chundered everywhere.

^ btw how’d you like high renaissance man?

Ya. Prof Gowers. Very scary indeed. Really tall, with white hair.

So you got into Trinity then?

Caltech > MIT

^^ I did, although it’s not my top choice as I don’t really want to do just maths for 3 years…

Nice. You must have done very well. I didn’t do too well, which probably explains why I got pooled.

Personally, it seems that the Trinity Fellows will give better supervisions than Magdalene Fellows, which is why I still have to get over not getting into Trinity.

Oh, it was really funny. I wanted to show it to my BBC-obsessed sister, but YouTube always breaks when she’s around.

Bumping this up again.

Okay one more bump.
