Cambridge or MIT

If you could pick either Cambridge University or MIT to study math, which one would you pick and why?

Cambridge. I love England more than America most times. Plus, MIT is pretty math/science- centered, and I am not.

Cambridge, hands down… If you only want to do “maths” (you’d have to learn to say maths) then Cambridge does that, three years of math math and more math. It does sort of depend of which college Trinity is the best college (esp for maths) where as a college like Girton is a bit bum out.

^ I learned to quit saying “maths” when I got made fun of in kindergarten -.-

I also learned how to “correctly” pronounce aluminum.

^ Haha your pronunciation got you into the habit of SPELLING “aluminium” incorrectly!

^ Ugh. Just ugh. Lol.

PS: In America, Aluminum is now the most common way to spell it. It’s in the dictionary and everything, so it’s correct on this side of the pond :p

^ Is it? I always though it was Aluminium I even typed it in on wikipedia to check it!

^ Type in Aluminum and you get just as many results lol. Plus, it’s spelled Aluminum on half of the sites. It just is shrugs

EDIT: http://www.worldwidewords.org/articles/aluminium.htm</a> Interesting article lol

^ That is an interesting article. Didn’t know there are two spellings, although I did kow about sulphur and sulfur.

Cambridge has a very very beautifull campus whereas MIT is ugly. So Cambridge

Do you like the college you got into? I don’t really (all girls and a Hill College, next to Fitzwilliam and all that), so I’m leaning toward MIT. I don’t remember which college you got into. You applied to Trinity and were pooled, IIRC.

If you’re 100% certain about maths, you’re probably going to get a lot more in depth at Cambridge. And you could always spend one year at MIT if you really wanted to (and were lucky enough to get into the program), with the exchange. I don’t know exactly how that works from Cambridge, since you’re only at uni for three years and I don’t think most people would want to have only two years at Cambridge.

@TYiL: I always spell sulphur with a ph, especially for like sulphates or sulphides. It looks stupid with an f.

How do Americans pronounce aluminium?

^^ The reason to do MIT would be to do maths and then also do physics or engineering or something whereas Cambridge is the best in the world for three years worth of pure maths… As for sulphur, it is nicer with a ph instead of an f. Also I’ve never heard of this MIT - Cambridge exchange, it’s too late now of course but still so odd that I’d never heard of it!

^ As Romani spelled it Al-oo-min-um

That sounds so weird lol

^^Really? There were signs all over Christ’s when I was there. Like “Spend a year in America at Harvard or MIT!” I’ve never heard of the Harvard-MIT exchange though, and can’t find anything out about it. Maybe it was just a Christ’s thing. But I was also obsessively obsessed with Cambridge for years and I’ve read like every MIT blog.

^ May have just been a Christ’s thing. Trinity had nothing in that vein… That being said I’m sure there are study abroad programs where you spend time in Oxford or Cambridge though…

Yah, so I got into Magdalene College, which isn’t the same as Trinity.

How is Magdalene College for maths? Or in general?

So would going to Magdalene College, Cambridge University or MIT be better?

I also would like to thank everyone so far for their helpful advice, I appreciate your responses.

If you want to do just maths then Cambridge. Easy. If you want to do anything other than maths or explore academically then MIT.

And Cambridge in general is amazing in maths, no matter what college you go to and Magdalene while it is not Trinity, John’s or Christ’s is still one of the top colleges.

Magdalene’s great. I wish Magadalene had fished me. mopes

Cambridge. The maths tripos is godly.
