Last year I bought D some sort of Canon ultra compact which she likes very much. Now she wants a Nikon D40, which looks like a very good camera, for graduation.

It was also her sisters birthday recently & since all I have sent her have been some gardening tools, I was thinking of getting her a digital point and shoot, because the one she is using is about 6 years old ( but then so is her laptop)

I could give her my Canon 570is, because I now want something with RAW capability, but I’d like to get her something new.
( but don’t have a huge budget)
any suggestions?

EK, we’ve owned a lot of digital point-and-shoots (beginning with 1MP Agfa 10 years ago - probably, the gradma of digital cameras), but my favorite so far is the touch-screen 10.2 MP Sony camera DSC-N2. It is flat and fits into pockets really well, plus it has a nice lens and fits inside a special waterproof underwater housing (sold separately). Also, it can be used for shooting video with sound.

You have to be a pretty dedicated shooter to have an SLR around when you need it. They are heavier and bulkier than the P&S cameras, and you have to think about lens selection. If she’s serious, either the Nikon or Canon dSLRs are good cameras, it just depends on which lens mount you want for the long haul. Glass lasts essentially forever while bodies get upgraded frequently. Pick a system you can stick with if you go SLR. All that said, she’ll likely be happier with a nice P&S she can keep on her key chain and it will always be with her.

This is great info! Our camera is confusing and produces poor pix. Would love to get a new one also!

Not to piggyback thread…but would anyone have a suggestion for a ‘video camera?’ Ours died 2 yrs ago & I’m feeling so guilty I have no moving pix of kids for that time! Looking for affordable/easy…
