We are thinking of buying a little teardrop trailer that we can pull behind our little Honda CRv…or perhaps a lightweight Aframe Aliner trailer. We are limited to 1500 lbs so trailers in this category are very limited! Anyone out there with stories or suggestions about these type of trailers?

We have a Honda CRV. I love it, but with a 4 cyl engine it feels underpowered at times. I didn’t think it could tow anything.

Sister had a Casita, very light weight, comes in two small sizes but has all the conveniences you would want. Best of all you can customize your own to order (built in Texas) or look for a used one. Good luck, we love camping and have moved up over the past 25 years through various types if campers.

We have a Casita and it is the bigger one, but H says the smaller one would still be too heavy for your CRV. We love our Casita and did get it from the plant in Texas (Rice, TX near Corsicana). I woukd be afraid to tow much of anything with a CRV. We tow with my Toyota FJ Cruiser.

No but you gave me a great idea!
I’ve already talked my H into this one! We have a Jeep Liberty

Since he would love to make this one

But it would take him five years.

Yep, casita is too heavy for me! I do love the camp-inn 550 but it is very pricey!!! Thinking of a Utilitoy or a car-go trailer by microliter…http://www.utilitoy.com. http://www.microlitetrailer.com/MLThome.htm

A smaller popup camper may work. Colemans are nice, but Flagstaff is a good cheaper alternative - we used to have one and liked it a lot.

It is very pricey, and first the jeep would have to go for a check up.

It’s good incentive to get the electrical system of our Jeep checked out, it can be wonky( my map lights go on by themselves).
Some teardrops are bigger, like the Casita, but some are advertised you can pull with a four cylinder, but I would assume that depends on terrain.
When I started looking at the options and accessories for the 550, like brakes and grab bars, it got even more pricey!
I like the ones that have an option to be SUV height, easier to get in and out of.

H built the prototype for the Dreamliner, he could probably handle building one, but I haven’t gotten to go camping for several years and I can’t wait!

We have considered getting a T@B …they are 1500 lbs fully loaded. [2012 T@B Trailer](2012 T@B Trailer - Tiny House Blog)
Lightweight, well made and a bit pricey. But cute as a bug.
Where we live, they seem to periodically pop up on Craigslist.

We also liked the Teal— www.tealinternational.com/TealCamper/index.html (you assemble on a trailer that you have bought—a little too ambitious for us)

I saw the TEAl, but I don’t know if they are actually marketing them yet. I worry a little about towing- haven’t ever towed anything and I like to see out my rear view mirror. Last night, tossing in bed, I wondered if my hot-flashy self could be comfortable in a 57" wide bed, not to mention being in a unit with no bathroom facilities! Lots to think about. Inam hopping over to the teardrop forums to listen in on the pertinent issues!

That T@B is adorable.

We have a very small house, and are actually sleeping in a full sized antique bed my great uncle made. ( I do love to go to hotels & get a king though)
You can get an accessory of having a side tent, where you could stand up to get dressed or use a port a pottie. But I think I probably would stay mostly with bathrooms.

I think I would like to rent one first to see how I liked hauling it. We’ve already downsized our family tent into one that barely fits a queen size air bed, but because of the hassle of getting out the door for a camping trip, we haven’t gone for about five years.
( we used to go 5 or 6 times a year until the kids schedules interfered- we had an extended mini van and we just kept throwing stuff in it until the dog gave up that we were actually going anywhere. ) The security & warmth of a trailer would make camping much more appealing, I still love camping, but my body doesn’t want to sleep on the ground anymore. Being able to store some of the equipment in the trailer would also be nice, not only it would be already packed, but I could get it off my back porch!

Right now we are camping with a fitted self inflating mattress made just for our pickup truck. We also have a tent that affixes to the bed of our truck.
I am not clear on the current status of the Teal either…we had seen a demo at an RV show last year. It seems very tempting, since we could store it unassembled in our garage. We do not have any room even to store a small trailer and would have to pay for storage.

We actually have a big double unattached (hence, uncooled!) garage. In it live various cans of old paint, a few scorpions and a rat or five… There is no real way to make sure that critters don’t get in the garage, so whatever I get has to be sealable and locked up tight! I don’t want to find a rat living in my trailer!

Before we bought our tent camper in 1998, we rented one. In our case we really needed to know we were comfortable towing that weight with our minivan, especially in the mountains. It cost a few hundred dollars for a long weekend, but it eased our mind about the upcoming purchase.

We are going to buy a car-go lite by microlite…all aluminum 950lbs fully loaded. Our poor little CRV can’t handle much else!!! I am so looking forward to having a little house on wheels and already planning how to customize it with a few storage options. :-). We have never owned any “toys”, but the time is now and I’m not getting any younger. Now, I just wish I had a little more vacation time available to me… I have this idea that I’d like to take a year off and travel the perimeter of the great USA…!

Sounds fun, anxiousmom! Let us know how it works out.

You’ll find that camper allows some easy weekend getaways. Once you have it stocked with your gear, it will be pretty easy to just head out for 2 or 3 days without much prep.
