"AUSTIN (KXAN) — The House has approved the Campus Carry gun law which was already cleared the Senate. The law now goes to Governor Abbott who says he will sign it.
This bill allows concealed license holders to bring their guns into college classrooms and dorms.
Over the past few days, that idea has been watered down some.
It does not include medical facilities and allows universities to designate ‘gun free zones’."
So… I guess this is going to happen. I am so thankful our youngest just graduated a week ago, because I am pretty sure we would have factored this into our college decisions for our kids. We are from Texas and disagree with this.
Do other states allow guns in dorms, or on campuses at all? Am I crazy to think this is a horrible idea?
We just went to one of those roadshow sessions with Brown, Chicago, Columbia, Cornell and Rice and my daughter liked the presentation about Rice but I am not sure that we will let her look if this law is signed.
At one point the bill exempted private schools - under the theory of private property rights - but that seems to have gone by the wayside. I hope some of the private schools file a lawsuit.
Has anyone heard if the gun-free zones can include dorms?
They tried to pass it here in OK last year. The University presidents objected strongly. It ended up not passing (something of a pleasant surprise). They did just pass a law allowing designated people to carry guns on school campuses. Kind of sneaked in pretty quietly during the weather and floods last week.
I’m not from the US and the whole gun culture baffles me, but I live in a State where guns are very popular. Despite my best efforts (or perhaps because of them) to get my kids to share my viewpoint, they are both gun owners.
My husband and I were at a casino yesterday and I was seated next to a very obnoxious and foul mouthed young man. I leant over and whispered to my husband “this is why concealed carry laws are not a good idea”.
It won’t affect you HiMom, Texas became the 34th state to allow open carry, but this is limited concealed carry on campuses. As much as I hate it, it’s less Wild West than many states.
I think I found the answer: … 7 states now have provisions allowing the carrying of concealed weapons on public postsecondary campuses. These states are Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, Mississippi, Oregon, Utah, and Wisconsin.
Had no idea! I wonder how they handle it in dorms.

Texas just approved open carry for licensed owners. Despite my surprise, that puts us at number 34 in approving open carry. I can’t imagine sidling up to some guy in line at Chik-filA who has a handgun casually strapped on…
I’m very against guns on campus. However, one does have to be 21 in order to be licensed, so that eliminates a lot of the campus population from carrying.
Still, guns and college kids, plus alcohol…I shudder.
I do hope you realize that this question has different answers dependent on one’s frame of reference and intent.
My answer as a law-abiding citizen with no intent to harm innocent people, but to defend as necessary is, “There are states, which allow guns on campus, and I would research and follow the several states’ laws.”
My answer as a criminal with intent to harm as necessary to get my way is, “It does not matter which states because my gun is allowed wherever I decide to carry it and commit a crime.”
As always, laws only affect affect the people who decide to follow said laws. But, it seems to make people feel better to say guns are not allowed in X place, even though the people who would harm them with a gun do not care or follow said law.
Psychologically, it is Interesting that people think a law that is not acknowledged and respected by the real criminal makes them safer. Go figure.
There have been many shootings where the perpetrator was supposedly normal and had a properly licensed gun. People were left scratching their heads as to what happened psychological to such a nice person.
