I’m like you, teriwtt, in crisis situations I don’t trust my physical self as I tend to shake.
I have a female neighbor who keeps a gun in her bedside drawer “just in case”. Totally ridiculous as we live in a gated community. The scary part is her 39 year old daughter, who has a history of mental illness, just moved in. Plus her toddler granddaughter. But the gun stays.
VA is a no permit required open carry state. To open carry a handgun you only need to be 18+ and not a prohibited person. To obtain a concealed carry permit you must be 21+ and go through a training course.
“I presume university administrators are prepared to accommodate dorm residents who refuse to share a room with a student who has a gun.”
JustOneDad, this was my question from the get-go. I tried reading the weapons policy at University of Colorado, for example, but couldn’t follow the legalese.
@JustTryHarder I think this is the info you are looking for
“Furthermore, University of Colorado Boulder housing regulations do not permit the storing of weapons in residence halls. As a convenience, the University Police Department provides weapons storage facilities with 24-hour access for university-housed students.”
Thanks, DFG! Just wondering how they handle the guns. I feel sorry for UT’s campus police, who IMO do a stellar job. They are the ones who will probably have to manage this.
the hostility portrayed in this thread toward the constitutional rights of others is slightly scary, and why the ‘right’ is able to successfully portray these rights as under attack from certain segments of the population.
Common sense and gun safety must prevail. The constitution calls for a well regulated militia not anyone, anywhere, anytime doing whatever they want, without background checks or training. Check your state for gun safety laws. It is surprising (& disturbing) how many states have none at all. There are many ppl I know personally that own, and even carry firearms but they have permits & training training. Heck I need a background check before using my camera professionally in a school, but some would propose a gun doesn’t! That’s ridiculous!
I haven’t heard of any mass shootings at colleges in these states: Arkansas, Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, Mississippi, Oregon, Utah and Wisconsin. Their state laws/ court decisions block colleges from banning licensed concealed carry on public campuses.
That story has nothing to do with law abiding citizens carrying guns on college campuses. It was a felon, illegally in possession of a gun, who shot at young adults after an argument in a neighborhood.
@soccerguy315 I am a gun rights person and I agree with Admiral McRaven that this is a bad idea. I do not believe you can portray McRaven as anti-gun or anti- 2nd amendment.
Hopefully the statute has enough safeguards that rules can limit where the guns are allowed on the campus. I would hate to see people allowed to carry into sporting events where alcohol is served.
I think the U of Colo. rule on guns is a good one.
So just to be clear, if a 25-year old student, former Marine, with a bunch of handguns were to go, say, into the Tower on the campus of the University of Texas, that would be okay, and no one could stop him? Just hypothetically speaking, of course.
