Hi guys. I’ll be applying to these colleges this fall:
University of Georgia
Georgia Tech
University of Pittsburgh
Duquesne University
University at Buffalo SUNY
Northeastern University
University of Rhode Island
NYU
St.John’s University
Rutgers
and maybe:
Ohio Northern
UPenn
Carnegie Mellon
I know it seems very random and scattered but I have chosen these based on the degree I hope to get. I was just wondering if anyone going to/ went to these schools could describe the campus culture. I feel like the colleges are all very different. For example, I know that UGA has a reputation for being a party school while students at Georgia Tech are much more studious. My final choice on a college will likely be more based on academics and price but I would also like to be able to weigh in campus culture. Thanks!
The best way to do so is to visit as many of these as you can and talk to students there. See what they say. Also see how each campus feels to you, a good reason to visit when classes are in session
You might have better luck visiting each individual college forum under Colleges and Universities section. It seems like you are asking other people to look into this for you since most people only attend one school.
Ohio Northern is a real outlier in this group. The majority of schools are urban or suburban schools. ONU is in a very small town in the middle of farm country. It has its strengths, I believe pharmacy is one of them. Many of the students attending will be from NW and NCentral Ohio. The campus is pretty but is quite isolated. It is not the place to attend if you are looking for vibrancy. Pretty much the opposite of most of the other schools you mentioned.
Northeastern student here that toured NYU as well, can help a bit but as others said, try posting on the individual college forums.
Northeastern is a very practical and independent environment. People are focused on both their academics and careers, take care of them for themselves, and for the most part expect their peers to be in the same mindset. It’s very work hard, play medium. We don’t go crazy partying, but it’s there if you want it. Politically, it’s overall liberal but you will find a broad range of political stances. Economic conservatism is much more common in business. Socially, everything is pretty normal. People are in and out due to co-op, and people expect it and it doesn’t really have an effect on your friends. Personally, I love the culture.
NYU I don’t have as good of a grip on but is a bit more academic than career focused. It feels a much less like a formal campus than NEU does, so that’s a difference there. People will tend to be a bit more liberal in comparison. Probably similar in the work hard, play medium. I’d try to talk to someone who goes there still, but I figured a bit would be better than none.
Some are big state schools, some are small private, I wouldn’t bother wasting time trying to visit every one on the list, instead visit one of each type/size.
Thanks for all of the replies. I’ve actually visited most of these schools but it was summer so I got a feel of what the campuses were like but not so much the culture. @LBad96 No, I’m actually from Georgia. I chose these schools for the pharmacy programs. Why do you ask?
