Campus feel

Does this school have a campus feel? I wonder about that because it is in Boston.

How are the writing and math labs, or places one would go to get academic support? Are professors available and wanting to assist during their office hours? I know classes are generally small, but how large are the largest? I know this was answered before, but I do not recall.

In answer to the campus feel portion of your question:

I had a chance to visit the campus this summer, and I was not expecting much of a “campus feel” because of its location in Boston, but I was pleasantly surprised. It does feel like a college campus, and is not very spread out through the city like I had expected (and like Boston U is). The campus is a separate area from downtown, and feels quite cozy for such a large school in such a large city.

If you are used to tiny, cute campuses, yes it will probably feel large and city-like, but overall, the “campus feel” is very present.

There are good resources for academic support. Most departments have “labs” to go for tutoring or questions. Professors generally have good office hours and are helpful, obviously depending on who it is.

Class size really depends on area of study. Science classes are most often going to be at least 100. Math, business, and writing courses tend to be smaller (around 30, probably). There are a handful of huge lecture courses with 300-400 students, but they’re usually intro level courses and usually taught by really great professors who can handle lecturing to 400 kids.

All academic departments have tutoring thats free and all professors have hours that they are there for you in the office and they do appointments as well. I’ve even had professors give me their cell numbers just in case.

Like Emily2007 said class size depends. Obviously if youre health science, etc. the bio or anatomy is gonna be a lecture of around 100 and then they have discussion groups called recitation that is smaller to go over problems, etc.

I had a class that was 400 BUT like she said there are only a few (literally 3-4) and they are Intro to Jazz, Sociology of Violence and Hate (which i took),etc. The sociology professor is Jack Levin and is a expert on violence and hate crimes. He speaks on larry king live, oprah, etc etc and the reason why its 400 people is because so many kids want to sit and listen to him. Oh and he does magic tricks at the beginning of class  He also bought us all food one day so we had catered breakfast after our quiz.

I’m a business student and other than my soc course and the astronomy lecture of 70 i’m in now its been under 35-40 in all my other classes with some of 13, 19, etc.
