Campus from The Kids Are All Right

Which college campus in California is featured in this movie? It is certainly beautiful. Just curious.

I was wondering that, too!

I thought it was supposed to be Stanford, but the allee area was from CalTech. But maybe not.

Apparently it was filmed at Occidental College.

Ha! I wondered that, too. I thought it might be Pomona, but it seems like it was Occidental (which is only a couple miles from Cal Tech, so maybe they did some filming there, too). The movie definitely implied that the daughter was going to Stanford, but there wasn’t any Stanford in the college drop-off scenes.

Great movie, by the way. There was absolutely nothing about it I didn’t like. Lisa Chodorenko’s other movies have been near-misses for me, but this one was a solid hit. The actors playing the kids are fantastic.

I didn’t like the ending. I found the film a bit passe and retro. Surely they could have found a way to incorporate this father into their family. Love is love. My hope was that as time passed, they would.

Didn’t see the movie yet… thanks for the spoiler alert mythmom :stuck_out_tongue: (just kidding)

No, you’re right. Didn’t think of it. Maybe I can edit my post.

Occidental, huh? Now there’s a place that would probably offer my 2012 D some merit aid… If she set foot on that campus, I’d never get her back to the proverbial farm. California is so pretty - especially compared to the Midwest at this time of year. Thanks

We saw this movie last night–it was excellent. S and I were discussing where it was that she was supposed to be going to college. We noted that it was cited as an 8 hour drive from wherever they were, which we assumed was the SF area, and she was supposed to be a top student, so we thought Pomona. The other possibility was a reversal of direction with Stanford as the college. Although the campus didn’t look like pictures we’ve seen of either one.

Never thought of Occidental.

BTW, I immediately started thinking “She’s picking the better bed and her room mate hasn’t even arrived yet!” :D

Oxy pops up in quite a few films and TV shows as it is easily accessible from LA studios and can look “like” several California campuses (Cal, Stanford) or a generic college quad with students (and the weather for outside filming is better than say Skidmore). I’m an alum and we were regularly treated to being on campus when it was also being some place else. I always get a kick out of seeing a film where i suddenly recognize a tree or bench from years gone by. Haven’t see Kids yet but this is one more reason to go.

where in the movie did it give you the idea she was headed to Stanford? I just remember it said she got good grades and got in every school she applied.

I knew they were in LA, and I just figured she’d be going to Stanford, especially when a drive was in order. The implication was that she was a complete brainiac, math/science person like her mom.

My daughter and I also assumed that the character would be attending Stanford (family living in LA, length of drive, high achiever). My daughter thought it was nice that it wasn’t specified, though. She felt that too often in movies when you have a smart kid going off to college it’s an Ivy or Stanford, not so much MIT, as if though these were the only schools worth going to. I think it’s just shorthand for “this is a smart kid” as those schools have name recognition for most people.

Occidental has a beautiful campus. Some of the dorms on the top of the hill have incredible views and the sunsets really light up the sky. Great academic scene, both inside and outside the classroom. One of the most interesting things about it as a campus is that LA is easily accessible (technically it’s in LA), but the campus itself doesn’t feel like LA or any other city. Wish I could get my child interested in it…

BTW, did you see the look of relief on the girl’s face when the parents finally left?

LA (where they lived), plus academically successful kid, plus driving distance but a long drive, plus mission-style architecture and not looking anything like Berkeley = Stanford.

mythmom – That possibility was hardly precluded. I thought that was how things would work out over time.

Okay. I don’t want to say much having already “spoiled.” Let’s just say I would have liked that to be part of the discourse of the film.
