Hi. I have been very sad since last January/February 2015. I am especially sad right now because my cat that I grew up since I was a baby died from old age.
Bondagles and others on this board think that I am depressed.
When I am at University of Maryland in the fall I will trudge through the semester. The problem is I need to figure out how to deal with my depression during the breaks (ie. Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter).
I get bored during those times.
When I am bored my depression worsens.
I noticed that when I go to work my depression goes away for a short time.
I am the neighborhood gardener.
Since this job is only seasonal what payed jobs can I find around the University of Maryland College Park?
I cannot drive and I only know how to weed, garden, saw bushes, and garden.
-Thanks
P.S
Don’t tell me to hang with friends 'cause I a’int got no friends.
I will help myself deal with my depression.
Ok, that’s partially a fib. I actually am a trained crisis counselor and could do a screening in person, but we are not in person. This is the internet and we are random strangers.
What you need is a living, breathing, face to face counselor that can help you work through things. We are not that and we cannot do that with or for you.
Making multiple threads about the same topic with a slight twist is not going to help you. At all. Please, go see a counselor.
PS I say this as someone who has battled Depression for nearly a decade. There is help. You can feel better and function as a whole person again. But only if you seek help, just as you would for any other ailment.
@beetleman, I’m sorry you’re having a rough time. You need to find the cause and address it. Making a plan to stay busy so you can ignore it or trying to arrange situations so you don’t have to deal with others won’t address what’s causing your situation. When your professors assign a group project or expect you to get involved in a class discussion, you will have to participate to pass the class.
Please take the advice you’ve received on multiple threads to go talk to someone. Do you have a family physician you can call? How soon will you get to campus? Find their counseling office as soon as you get there.
Even if someone here knew the perfect job for you, it’d all be pretty pointless in the end. You cannot distract yourself forever. There’s gonna be a time sooner or later where you are alone with nothing to occupy your thoughts and it is in these moments where you’re gonna have to be honest with yourself and seek help. You can only put things off for so long.
At my kid’s large state U, there are gardening jobs available. They are listed online under Campus Rec employment. Here’s an abbreviated description: Work with our community of over 100 gardeners at our 26 bed garden. We operate two garden sites on campus. Community Garden staff assist our community gardeners in the maintenance of each plot. Weeding, watering, pest control, and composting are part of the daily duties. Must be comfortable working outdoors in all weather. Previous gardening knowledge or experience helpful, but not necessary.
If this is the kind of work you like, maybe your U has something similar. Besides making you feel productive, it may be an opportunity to meet one or two people who share a similar interest. Please try to be open to that.
The University of Maryland must have a job board for on campus employment. Go on there and search for a job.
Follow the other posters’ advice. Your school is a large one and has a [Mental Health Center](Behavioral Health Services | UMD Health Center). Take advantage of it. From all the threads of your I’ve read, you desperately need to do that.
