Campus Life and Campus Setting Washington University in St. Louis vs. CMU

Hey, basically I have narrowed my choices to these two colleges. I don’t really care about the academics as I have read its more about the overall fit of the university. In your opinion what are some pros and cons of the two different campuses and university settings.

For example:

How are the dorms at WashU and CMU?

How is the food?

How is the city for an international student?

and etc.

Thanks.

I’m a senior in high school now (deciding between WUSTL, CMU, and Case Western), but having visited both of the choices you mentioned, my opinions…:

Dorms:
I only saw one freshman dorm at CMU. It was really nice and modern- but the room I saw was SMALL. I saw a few dorms, traditional and modern, at WUSTL. The traditional dorms weren’t quite as nice as the dorm I saw at CMU, but the modern ones were at least as nice- if not nicer. Also, the rooms I saw at WUSTL (both traditional and modern) were much bigger than the room I saw at CMU.

Food:
I’ve heard a few opinions about the food at CMU… mostly that people get sick of the options (it was actually pretty good when I ate their, but I could totally see how you could get sick of the same things). The food at WUSTL was pretty good, and I haven’t really heard any negatives about it.

City:
CMU isn’t in downtown Pittsburgh, but it’s not far away, and it seemed like a cool place for students (US or international!). I didn’t get to explore St. Louis at all, but I’ve heard similar things.

Academics:
Both schools are well-known and respected. What are you planning to study? If you are thinking about being pre-med, WUSTL does have the advantage of the medical school. Personally, I want to majoring in engineering and minoring in art… one thing I liked about both of these schools is that I could do this.

Size:
I can’t recall off the top of my head, but I think they’re both in the same range (4-6k).

Sports:
I don’t think either school is really known for their sports teams, but WUSTL’s basketball team did win D3 national championships, I think. WUSTL’s mascot is the bear; CMU is the scotty dog (someone correct me if I’m wrong). CMU’s “official school color” is tartan plaid (though their sports uniforms are red and gray, I believe). WUSTL’s colors are red and green.

Hey thanks, please tell me where you have decided to go when you have decided.

I’m from St. Louis, and I can tell you Wash. U. is in a great location. It’s a very short walk from the University City Loop, which is a walkable artsy area with great restaurants. It’s also right across the street from Forest Park, which contains the Art Museum, History Museum, and Zoo, among other things.

Bump. 10char

My son shared a huge one bedroom apartment his freshman year at CMU, but with the disadvantage that it was a bit of a walk to campus. He liked the room enough he stayed in it the next year. I’m not sure though that any of the apartments are still freshman housing - they seem to change every year. They’ve got plans of all the options on the website though - there’s a lot of variations.

CMU’s food is nothing special, a lot of it is like the stuff you can get a mall foodcourt. My son got off the meal plan as soon as he could.

I can’t speak for how Pittsburgh is for internationals - but there are lots of internationals at CMU. Both my son’s roommates were internationals - one from Korea, the other from Dubai.

Setting - Carnegie Mellon is in an attractive residential neighborhood adjacent to a large public park. There is a commercial strip a short walk from the campus and U. of Pittsburgh is about ten minutes away as well. Carnegie Museum and Library are adjacent to campus.

Can’t really speak to WUSTL - it’s been way too long since I’ve seen it.

I’m kinda sick of my wife’s cooking, too. She’s a scratch cook, we grow a lot of our own veggies, and we have been together for 34 years. I’ve grown to love repetition :)
