Any advice on getting the real attention in a letter to a university regarding their university safety shuttle and how it is inefficient (i.e. wait outside a building for 20 minutes alone at 2 AM). What would you include in the letter?
I would like to send a letter, but want to make sure that it is very clear and to the point that they really need to step up this service and provide “true” safety for the students.
Thanks!

Its hard to know what to say without understanding how the safety shuttle service is supposed to work.

For example, at my daughter’s school their late-night service operates on a call-in basis. Students would specifically tell dispatch what building they need transportation from, and they are permitted to wait inside the locked building until the shuttle arrives.

In addition, their transportation system operates using GPS technology and students are given a web-address that is accessible from their computers/mobile phone devices that provides real-time locations of the shuttles. They can tell exactly where on the map their ride is, and approximate how much longer it will take for the shuttle to arrive.

Waiting 20 minutes for a safety shuttle doesn’t really seem terribly unreasonable, since its possible the shuttle was on another run and out of the area. Having to wait outside in order to use the service would be a concern; there should be a way for you to remain inside in a safe area until the shuttle arrives.

As a general rule, I don’t believe that parents of current students should be injecting themselves into student life issues. If your daughter has a problem with the shuttle system and wants to take a leadership stance, that’s great. A letter from mom is, IMO, not really an idea thing for an adult college student.

There are exceptions, of course. This doesn’t strike me as one that rises to the level of parental intervention.

Call a cab if the service is not good enough. If 2 am is also bar time all services will be prettty busy. Cab waits could easily be similar.
